The Office of International Affairs cultivates and nurtures the growth of global perspectives at The Ohio State University. International Affairs oversees the Study Abroad Program, International Student and Scholar Services, five Area Studies Centers and the Global Gateways. The office also sponsors and administers grants, develops international agreements with foreign institutions, supports student scholars and conducts education outreach and special events.

“Any experience that puts a person outside of their comfort zone prepares them for a career caring for others. There is something about interacting with people totally different than yourself and doing it with an open heart and mind that is valuable to the workforce. I plan to become an occupational therapist that carries these experiences and interactions with me so I can better serve my patients,” reflected Brynn Stewart, a health sciences major on the Australia: Human Impacts on the Natural Environment program 🇦🇺

The program offers students a complete view of the unique wildlife and ecosystems within the state of Queensland in the country’s northeast, such as tropical rainforests, reefs and the Outback.

“I saw this as a great opportunity to become more independent and immerse myself in a completely different culture. As a business major, I also wanted to strengthen my global mindset by understanding how companies operate around the world,” reflected Lauren Moorhead, a finance major who participated in the Fisher College of Business Freshman Global Lab: Germany program 🇩🇪

During this two-week experience, business students attend lectures at Kühne Logistics University in Hamburg, Germany and visit corporations like Mercedes Benz and Nestle to learn about global logistics and operations.

“Going abroad was very important for me because as a pre-med student, I was able to learn about different global health care systems. This taught me the importance of cultural awareness and being empathetic towards diverse populations. I knew this program would increase my confidence and independence when it came to international travel,” said Lilly Rich, a neuroscience major who participated in the Across Borders: Healthcare Perspectives and Clinical Shadowing in Greece and North Macedonia program 🇬🇷🇲🇰

On the 15-day program led by the College of Medicine, students visit cities across the two countries such as Skopje, Ohrid and Thessaloniki, where they shadow doctors in the field and engage with current medical students.

Sree Ramya Krishna G, an international student from Hyderabad, India, came to The Ohio State University to broaden her perspective and ended up discovering new cultures, opportunities and academic growth beyond her expectations.

"As the first international student from India majoring in Korean language and literature at Ohio State, I enjoyed the opportunity to research topics I am personally interested in. My literature studies research focuses on India-Korea relations and culture in Korean and English Languages. My long-term dream is to publish a book about my research. From the wide range of literature available in the university’s libraries to the academic support from professors, I was able to take my first step towards my dream as an undergraduate student," Krishna-Govardhan explained.

"There are so many international students. It was amazing to find a community where I could talk to so many people from different backgrounds."

“As someone who wants to create and perform on the international stage, this program was not only a steppingstone in that direction, but it opened my eyes to how dance can be used as a powerful tool to transcend borders,” reflected Masha Moiseytseva, a dance major who participated in the Dance Denmark program 🇩🇰

This three-week program led by the Department of Dance allows students to journey across Denmark and Germany to take dance classes at international schools, perform for new audiences and explore the history and sites of major cities.

As part of the Foreign Student Program, Bahranian Wafa Ahmed is looking to build on her passion for modeling and prediction to make a positive difference in community health. Ahmed shares what her journey to being a biostatistics master's student in The Ohio State University College of Public Health.

"Honestly, I never imagined I would end up working in health — if someone had told me that 10 years ago, I would not have believed it! After finishing my bachelor’s degree in statistics, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and I was looking for an opportunity to do meaningful research. I volunteered with the Public Health Directorate at the Ministry of Health in my home country, Bahrain, and that experience changed everything. I joined the data and contact tracing team in the communicable diseases section, and I quickly witnessed just how critical statisticians are in that space. The daily work showed me how much our role truly matters."

“Studying abroad was important to me because I wanted to immerse myself in a different culture and challenge myself to be outside of my comfort zone. As a public health student, I’ve learned how history, culture and environment shape people’s lives. Being immersed in another country has really broadened my worldview and allowed me to apply new perspectives to everyday life,” reflected Essence Dean, a public health student who participated in the Global May Paris program 🇫🇷

"When I arrived in Columbus in 2023, far from my home in Thailand, I carried what many international students carry: excitement, uncertainty, hope, fear, and countless questions. Over time, those uncertainties transformed into curiosity, gratitude, and a deeper understanding of the world around me. Living in America has not made me less Thai; instead, it has strengthened my appreciation for my own identity while teaching me to learn from the many identities and perspectives around me," shares Pitcha Inthiti, a PhD student from Thailand in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the The Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology.
