Hello everyone!

We are gearing up for another exciting REU program this summer! If you know any community college students who you think would be a good match for our program, or if you're in touch with past instructors who might have a student or two who'd benefit from our program, please encourage them to check out the program and submit an application!

A unique and rewarding research training opportunity, specifically created for community college students interested in physics and astronomy, is being offered during the summer of 2014 at Texas A&M University-Commerce in Commerce, Texas.

Our eight fantastic 2014 REU participants are nearing the halfway point of their experience. This week included a visit to Texas Instruments and excellent talks on neutron star physics by two of our participants. Added to last week's talks on the crystalline structure of copper and on the rotation of two asteroids, the bar is set high for our remaining four students' presentations.

Dr. Williams is at a meeting today and tomorrow about maintaining and improving the REU experience. Most is administrative in nature, but there are a couple cool ideas in the works. We'll let you know if anything exciting will happen!

Good (though still unofficial) news: the REU program will likely be funded for another 3 years! We are waiting on the final rubber stamps and official letters, but if you know any community college students who are considering a 4-year STEM degree and might be interested in the REU experience, please encourage them to watch this page!

Emily Graslie is the Chief Curiosity Correspondent at the Field Museum in Chicago, Ill. In the most recent episode of her YouTube series, she highlights issues that women *still* face in the sciences based on her own "fan" mail and video comments.
