🌿 Meet 'umunhum miryan 🌿
Also known as hummingbird sage, 'umunhum miryan, is a California native plant that brings color and life to shady gardens. Its vibrant pink flowers bloom from late winter through summer, providing an important nectar source for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies when many other plants are not flowering. 🐝🦋

In Chochenyo, 'umunhum means hummingbird, giving this plant its name because hummingbirds are among its closest friends. ❤️ Beyond supporting pollinators, the Ohlone use 'umunhum miryan to soothe sore throats and indigestion. The Ohlone also use its leaves to brew delicious, sweet tea. 🍵 It's especially refreshing served over ice in the summer. ☀️

Found throughout California's coast ranges, 'umunhum miryan thrives in dry, shaded areas, often beneath oak trees, making it a perfect choice for water-wise native landscapes. 🌳

🐾 Bobcat spotted at CSU East Bay, Concord! 🐾
A recent bobcat sighting reminds us that our campus is home to a diverse community of wildlife. They play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. ♻️🌎🌱

Bobcats are skilled predators that help naturally regulate populations of ground squirrels, rabbits, gophers, mice, and other small mammals. This is especially important on the Concord campus, where California ground squirrels are abundant and can quickly increase in number when predator pressure is low. 🐿️

Bobcats aren't the only predators helping maintain balance. Red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawks, great horned owls, and gopher snakes all play a role in controlling rodents and other prey species. Together, these animals form a natural system of checks and balances that support biodiversity and ecosystem health. ⚖️

🐱 Fun Facts:
- Bobcats are named after their short, "bobbed" tails
- They can pounce up to 12 feet
- They can run up to 30 mph
- They're expert climbers and swimmers
- They're only found in North America
- They're most active at dawn and dusk
- They're usually shy and will not attack humans unless provoked

🌿 Meet siit 🌿
siit, also known as yarrow, is a resilient California native known for its feathery leaves and clusters of tiny flowers. Its broad, flat blooms make nectar easy for pollinators to reach, attracting bees, butterflies, and beetles. 🐝 It has also been shown that birds that use siit in their nests deter parasites and increase the survival of their young. 🪺

The Ohlone use siit by warming its leaves and putting them on cuts and bruises to help reduce swelling, placing the leaves in the mouth to ease toothaches 🦷, and preparing tea from the leaves and flowers to help soothe stomachaches.

Drought-tolerant and easy to grow, siit thrives in a variety of conditions. siit is more than just a beautiful garden plant; it has long held a special place on Ohlone land as both a healing herb and an ecological ally. 🌱

☀️ Honoring Growth, Community, and New Beginnings ☀️

On May 5, the graduating nursing cohort came together to plant a beautiful Manzanita tree in the garden as a lasting symbol of resilience, compassion, and growth. 🌱

Surrounded by nursing faculty, classmates, and supporters, the ceremony celebrated not only the students' accomplishments, but also the strong foundation built throughout the past 5 semesters of their nursing journey. 🩺

During the ceremony, the graduating class shared their gratitude for the faculty who guided, supported, and inspired them over the last 2 and a half years. They shared how, much like the Manzanita tree planted that day, their nursing journey began as something small but full of potential, growing through patience, encouragement, care, and nurturing along the way. 🙏

The students described the tree's roots as the foundation their faculty helped create, its trunk as the resilience they developed along the way, and its branches as the many paths and opportunities they will pursue as future nurses. 🌳

From digging and planting to watering the tree together, each step reflected the care and dedication these future nurses bring to others every day. The Manzanita will continue to grow for years to come, serving as a living reminder of the lasting impact that this graduating class and the faculty who supported them will have on healthcare. ❤️

Fun fact: Our campus has its own protected nature area at our Galido Creek Field Station! It’s home to dozens of species of wildlife and serves as a biological research site dedicated for use by Cal State East Bay faculty, students and community partners. 🌿 Meet hawwen 🌿
Manzanita 🍎 has a fragrant scent, flowers that taste like green apples, and small red berries that look like little red apples.

These drought-tolerant trees are exclusively found in California and support birds and insects, including monarch butterflies 🦋

The Ohlone use the branches for digging sticks, the berries to make cider, and the leaves to brew tea. The tea and cider are used to help with digestive problems. The leaves are also used for skin problems like rashes and itchiness from poison oak.

With their twisting branches and smooth red bark, hawwen are both beautiful and important for healthy ecosystems. They can help conserve water, create habitat, and support biodiversity! 🐦🐝🌎

Our Concord Center supports all efforts to preserve the Bay Area's nature.

No Mow May started as a way to help pollinators by letting lawns grow longer. However, experts now say the bigger picture involves creating healthier, more sustainable yards year-round. One simple change? Reduce or eliminate the use of leaf blowers.
Gas-powered leaf blowers contribute to noise, emissions, and air pollution while disturbing soil, insects, and pollinator habitats.
Using a gas-powered two-stroke leaf blower for just 30 minutes can produce pollution levels comparable to driving a pickup truck from Texas to Alaska. 🛻💨

Instead:
✅ Rake or sweep smaller areas
✅ Use electric leaf blowers, if necessary
✅ Leave fallen leaves/mulch for pollinators
✅ Plant native flowers
✅ Mow less often

A quieter, greener yard benefits everyone, including wildlife! 🐝🌻 Our Concord Center is always doing our part!
