The Coastal Carolina University Department of Theatre proudly celebrates the completion of our 2026 Maymester New Works Developmental Reading of Roots Grow Back - a new musical by Selda Sahin and Derek Gregor.

Over six days, our students, faculty, and guest artists immersed themselves in the thrilling process of developing new musical theatre - exploring story, structure, music, character, and collaboration in real time. From first rehearsals to public presentations, this project embodied the spirit of creative risk-taking and artistic growth.

We are deeply grateful to Selda and Derek and guest music supervisor Steven Gross for sharing their work, their generosity, and their artistry with our students and audiences. Thank you as well to everyone who helped bring this exciting developmental process to life.

CCU is proud to be a part of the future of American Theatre. CHANTS UP!

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have protected the freedoms that allow artists, educators, students, and communities to gather, create, and share stories.

From all of us at the Coastal Carolina University Department of Theatre, we extend our deepest gratitude to those we remember today and to the families who carry their legacy forward.

As theatres go dark for a moment of reflection, may we continue to celebrate the enduring spirit of service, sacrifice, and unity that defines this day.

Wishing our CCU Theatre family and community a meaningful and peaceful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸
