👏 Congratulations to CCU students Gavin Smithson and CJ George, who recently presented findings from their Los Alamos National Laboratory–CCU Collaboration research during the Gupta College of Science’s Board of Visitors meeting.

Gavin and CJ shared their work on the Anomaly Detection in Manufactured Parts project, a research effort focused on supporting quality assurance for precision manufactured components. As part of this project, they have contributed to AnnoMate, a tool that helps inspectors load images of manufactured parts, annotate potential issues, and use built-in machine learning models to support evaluation.

Their work reflects the kind of hands-on, applied research experience that helps students grow as computing professionals while contributing to projects with real scientific and engineering significance.

As Professor Dakota Fulp, one of the mentors of the LANL-CCU Collaboration, said:

“Gavin and CJ represent the kind of student researchers we hope to develop—curious, capable, and willing to take on challenging problems with real-world importance. Their work shows what can happen when students are given the opportunity to contribute to meaningful research early in their academic careers.”

🎉 Congratulations to Marcos Carvajal, a Coastal Carolina University undergraduate researcher and student in the LANL-CCU Collaboration, for earning 2nd Place for Best Oral Presentation at CCU’s 2026 Undergraduate Research Symposium!

Marcos was selected from a field of 72 oral presentations for his presentation, “From Static to Scripted: Enabling Flexible IOR Workflows in Parallel File System Benchmarking.”

His research focuses on improving how researchers test and understand the performance of large-scale storage systems used in high-performance computing. Unlike the storage in a personal laptop, these systems must support many users and applications accessing data at the same time. Marcos’s work helps make benchmarking tools more flexible, allowing researchers to create custom testing scenarios that better reflect how large computing systems are used in real-world environments.

"This award reflects not only the quality of Marcos’s technical work, but also his ability to communicate complex computing concepts clearly to a broad audience. I have VERY proud of his accomplishment!" said Dr. Jones, computer science professor and PI of the LANL-CCU Collaboration.

🎉 Celebrating Excellence in the LANL–CCU Collaboration 🎉

On April 21, 2026, Coastal Carolina University hosted a special recognition event honoring the outstanding contributions of students, collaborators, and mentors involved in the Los Alamos National Laboratory–Coastal Carolina University (LANL–CCU) Collaboration Initiative.

This event celebrated the innovation, dedication, and hard work of students engaged in research across:

⚡ High-performance computing
🇺🇸 National laboratory–aligned research

Dr. William Jones and Dr. Crystal Cox presented certificates recognizing the many students and mentors whose efforts continue to drive this initiative forward.

🎉 CCU Computing Students Showcase Research at 2026 Undergraduate Symposium 🎉

On April 21, 2026, nine undergraduate researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory–Coastal Carolina University (LANL–CCU) Collaboration delivered oral presentations at the Coastal Carolina University Undergraduate Research Symposium in Conway, SC.

These students presented 15-minute talks highlighting their work in:

đź’» High-performance computing
🤖 Machine learning
🏭 Advanced manufacturing

The participating students included:

Raymond Pridgen, Meghan Lomas, Marcos Carvajal, Luke Beirne, Gavin Smithson, Desmond Holmes, CJ George, David Pence, and Avery Javens

Their research explored topics such as:

Energy modeling in HPC systems
Parallel file system benchmarking
Defect detection in manufacturing
Human-in-the-loop machine learning systems

A few featured projects included:

🔹 Predictive modeling of energy consumption in HPC environments
🔹 Extending ZFS for accelerator-based storage performance
🔹 Defect localization using segmentation metrics like IoU
🔹 AnnoMate & MicroSentryAI for human-AI collaborative annotation
🔹 Detection of internal defects in 3D-printed parts
