This summer, we’re revisiting student achievements recognized at the Department of Computer Science's end-of-semester Celebrate CS event. Next up: Tech’s Autonomous Robotics Club! 👏

ARC enjoyed an outstanding spring semester, with victories at university, regional and international competitions:

Throughout the summer, we’re looking back at computer science students and teams recognized during our end-of-semester Celebrate CS event. First up:

Congratulations to Benjamin Hewitt, Drew Phelps and Max Jessey, members of Tennessee Tech’s IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) student chapter, who placed second in the IEEE SoutheastCon 2026 software competition in Huntsville, Ala.

We’re proud of their accomplishment and look forward to sharing more CS student success stories this summer – and creating even more this fall!

We're thrilled to announce that Tennessee Tech is expanding its role in advanced computing and scientific discovery with the launch of GENESIS!

GENESIS – a high-performance computing cluster designed to accelerate large-scale research applications, strengthen workforce development and support technology-driven economic growth across Tennessee – was commissioned by the university's ASCEND Center (Advanced Scalable Computing, Extreme Networks & Data), directed by computer science professor Tony Skjellum, Ph.D.

“High-performance computing makes AI possible," Skjellum said. "GENESIS offers our researchers the ability to work directly with a world-class compute system that equips them to win major federal grants, attract outstanding doctoral students and become go-to partners for national laboratories and industry leaders.”

For the third consecutive year, Tennessee Tech’s Department of Computer Science was recognized by the Tennessee College Public Relations Association with a communication award!

At last week’s TCPRA conference in Chattanooga, the department received third place in the Specialty Item category for its custom computer science challenge coin, which features graphic elements representing the department’s academic majors and concentrations: Artificial Intelligence, High-Performance Computing and Cybersecurity. The design also marks the department’s 40th anniversary with the inscription “Est. 1986,” while the reverse side displays Tennessee Tech’s official computer science seal.

Graduating students in the 2025-26 academic year received two of these coins — one to keep as a memento and one to present, along with a note of thanks, to the faculty or staff member who had the greatest impact on their academic journey at Tech. This initiative highlighted gratitude, mentorship and a sense of community within the department.

Congrats to the team behind this award-winning project!

Just one week ago, these Tennessee Tech computer science grads took the next step in their professional journey by taking the Pledge of the Computing Professional during the College of Engineering’s Induction into the Profession Ceremony, held the evening before spring commencement.

It’s a proud tradition that celebrates their entry into the computing field alongside their engineering peers.
