CGBS is excited to share a recap of the incredible event we hosted with Dr. Mysia Anderson-White who presented a beautiful reflective discussion with historian, activist, preservationist, and living legend Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, matriarch of the Miami-Dade communtiy. 🎉 Dr. Fields was captivating among a room filled with students, staff, and faculty who were eager to learn about Miami's rich history in the struggle for Civil Rights. Her message to the UM students in attendance was to "Stay alert, know what's going on, and think about it. You're bright, and you're smart. I'm talking to each and every one of you. You're here and you will do well and I'll be looking for you."

Overall, it was a truly enriching experience that left many feeling inspired and motivated. You can view the event on our YouTube channel listed in our linktree in bio.

This is part 1 of a 3 part series Dr. Anderson will be presenting during her residency at the University of Miami. Stay tuned the next events.🚀

How do Black artists, writers, musicians, and institution builders express their experiences and create sustainable communities? “Performing Black Miami” is a dynamic exploration of the rich cultural tapestry created by Miami’s ongoing African Diaspora. Through engaging with historical narratives, theatrical productions, artistic expressions, and institution building, we will delve into the ongoing fight for social justice, the resilience of Black neighborhoods, and the vibrant aesthetic traditions that define Black Miami.
