Ahhh....days like these, where the heart is at once filled with joy and bursting at its seams with joy, while simultaneously being utterly overwhelmed by the loss of one of the richest minds and voices of a generation, one deeply thoughtful and considered, steeped in history and always straining, leaning forward to remake the wor(l)d in our image/imagination. On the same day that I learned that Edwidge Danticat won the prestigious Vilcek Prize in Literature, I also learned of Kamau Brathwaite's passing. The close proximity of this joy and sadness reminds me (yet again) that joy and sorrow live in the same house, and are, even in the worst of time, always on speaking terms with one another. With this in mind, I will say this: rest well Kamau, rest with the knowledge the word, sound, power, is in VERY good hands. You have left us a legacy of wor(l)ds carefylly crafted that will keep our imagination and our spirits full well beyond all of our lifetimes. A mighty tree has fallen, yes, but the landscape is not not left barren, it is lush, vibrant and ever able to provide safe harbor for all of those who seek its protection.

Walk good Kamau and when you take your rest, do so comfortably, knowing that our wor(l)ds are still being remade in our imaginations now, and for generations to come. Ase.

Folks, come out and see the film, join the discussion of this critically important reality. Issue is too light a term for what is taking place -- human trafficking is a new reality and the Caribbean region is deeply affected by this emerging crisis. This is a special fundraising screening of Kareem Mortimer's Cargo in aid on ongoing Hurricane Dorian relief efforts in The Bahamas. The filmmaker will be in attendance.
