What makes a person feel they truly belong? For LGBTQ+ adults, the answer has real consequences for mental health, well-being, and resilience against discrimination.

A new study by SEHD's Dr. Samuel Skidmore, published in Culture, Health & Sexuality, asked 528 LGBTQ+ adults to define belonging in their own words — identifying six key factors: mutuality, accepting environments, identity and authenticity, relationships, active engagement, and representation.

One participant put it simply: "I have someplace to be myself."

Congratulations to doctoral student Fairuziana Humam Hamid on her induction into the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at Yale University — one of the highest honors available to graduate scholars in the country. 🎉

A Ph.D. candidate in Community Well-Being at SEHD, Fairuziana's research focuses on the well-being of Muslim women and community mental health. For her, this honor is more than a personal milestone — it is a platform to advocate for underrepresented voices in academia and ensure that the vital work of women in communities is recognized and supported.

"It connects me to a broader network that views education not merely as a tool for individual success, but as a mechanism for collective good."

When an athlete takes a stand, who's actually listening — and who's tuning out? 🏟️

New research from SEHD's Dr. Youngho Park published in European Sport Management Quarterly finds that political identity shapes how Americans respond to athlete activism — but strong sport fandom can cut through partisan bias in ways conventional political messaging simply cannot.

The study found that being a highly identified fan actually reduced opposition to activism that conflicted with a fan's own political views — making sport one of the few spaces where partisan walls come down.

Big news from SEHD! 🎉 Dr. Wanli Xing has been awarded a $4.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES), with an additional contribution from Carnegie Learning, Inc. — bringing the total to over $4 million in funding.

As Principal Investigator, Dr. Xing will lead groundbreaking work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and education.

The School of Education and Human Development welcomed over 140 new graduate students beginning their programs this fall. The Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies Office hosted a New Graduate Student Meet and Greet on Friday, August 14, on the second floor of the Max Orovitz Building.

Students had the opportunity to meet Dean Khon Wood, Vice Dean Ahn, Assistant Dean McDonald, Program Faculty, and AAGS support staff. The event also featured giveaways, and Sebastian the Ibis stopped by to greet the students and help celebrate the start of the fall semester. 🙌
