A group of University of Iowa researchers are working to turn a discovery made while studying donated corneas in an Iowa laboratory, into something patients can eventually use.

With federal funding from the NIH, the researchers are focused on advancing an antioxidant-based technology that may eventually lead to new eye drop treatments for dry eye disease, Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, and other conditions involving oxidative stress.

Iowa Lions Eye Bank (ILEB), part of the UI Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, is the only eye bank in the state of Iowa and supports all 99 counties.

ILEB visitors are invited to learn how eye bank staff recover, evaluate, process, and distribute ocular tissue donated by generous individuals for use in corneal transplantation, research, and education at the University of Iowa and throughout the world. Guests will also learn how Iowa Lions Eye Bank honors donors and their loved ones for the gift of sight, provides outreach and education to the public, and engages in cutting-edge research to revolutionize our understanding and treatment of eye disease and improve eye banking practices.
