Ahndraya Parlato, Assistant Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology

Ahndraya Parlato has published four books: TIME TO KILL, (Mack Books, 2026), Who Is Changed and Who Is Dead, (Mack Books, 2021), A Spectacle and Nothing Strange, (Kehrer Verlag, 2016), and East of the Sun, West of the Moon, (a collaboration with Gregory Halpern, Études Books, 2014). Additionally, she has exhibited work at: the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY, Spazio Labo, in Bologna, Italy, Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburgh, PA, The Aperture Foundation, New York, NY, and The Swiss Institute, Milan, Italy. Parlato has been awarded residencies at The Ellis Beauregard Foundation, Light Work and The Visual Studies Workshop, and grants from Light Work, the New York Foundation for the Arts and The Joy of Giving Something Foundation. She and has been a nominee for the ICP Infinity Award, the Paul Huf Award from the FOAM Museum in Amsterdam, and the SECCA Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and is a 2024 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow.

The event will take place at the Dowd Gallery and is free and open to the public.

On view at SUNY Cortland’s Dowd Gallery from Oct 22-Nov 27th, “Discardia” brings together a group of artists who share an interest in the cultural, aesthetic, and material possibilities for what has been cast aside. Curated by Leslie Brack and Wylie Schwartz, the show invites viewers to reconsider everyday objects and waste, exploring questions of consumption, reuse, value, and transformation—and the capacity of art to generate new meanings and associations from the discarded.
