Sad news of the passing of our classmate Teddy Parker '83. Teddy attended 6 semesters at Wabash and was an independent. He participated in track, MXI, and Sphinx Club. He was also a member of the 1982 National Basketball Championship Team.

Teddy Arcel Parker, 65, of Moores Hill passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at his home with his loving family by his side. Teddy was born on Monday, January 16, 1961, in Hamilton, Ohio; son of James and Frances (Todd) Parker. He married Terry (Vaught) Parker and she survives him. Teddy worked as a machine operator at Hill-Rom. He was an avid sports fan with his favorite team being the Jackson Jaguars. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and watching sports. The 132nd Monon Bell Classic will be played at Scheumann Stadium at Ball State University in Muncie, IN on Nov. 14, 2026.

The 2026 Monon Bell Classic was originally scheduled to be played at DePauw; however, the Dannies are in the early stages of constructing a new facility, requiring the game to move to a neutral location this year.

Wabash owns a 63-59-9 overall record against DePauw since the teams first met in 1890. The Little Giants hold a 44-43-6 advantage since the 300-pound Monon Bell was donated to the rivalry by the Monon Railroad in 1932.

The teams last played at a neutral site on Nov. 25, 1922, when Wabash earned a 30-0 victory at Irwin Field in Indianapolis. Wabash and DePauw have met at neutral sites seven times, beginning with the 1915 game at Washington Park in Indianapolis. The Circle City hosted games between from 1915 through 1917 and again from 1919 through 1922.

Wabash owns a 4-2-1 record in neutral-site games against DePauw.

Ticket information for the 22,500-seat Scheumann Stadium will be announced in late August.

Richard "Rick" Gunderman '83 named president-elect of Indiana State Medical Association

Ten-time recipient of the IU Trustees’ Teaching Award, Richard Gunderman, MD, PhD, Chancellor’s Professor, John A. Campbell Professor of Radiology, and vice chair of education for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at IU School of Medicine, has been chosen as the 179th president of the Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA). The ISMA is a federation of county and district medical societies across Indiana.

Gunderman graduated summa cm laude in 1983 from Wabash College and earned his MD and PhD at the University of Chicago. An ISMA member since 2005, he chairs the ISMA’s Physician Wellness Steering Committee, helping to ensure more physicians’ voices are heard.

Rick plans to use this new role to help create more interest in the field of medicine for the next generation, which is currently lacking. According to a recent poll conducted by Doximity, about 63%, or nearly two-thirds, of doctors don't want their kids to practice medicine. Gunderman is making it his mission to combat this statistic.

“This is a distress call,” Gunderman said. “We need to work vigorously and together to restore pride and joy in our profession. To do so, we need to ensure that our voices make a difference. After all, we know better than anyone what our patients and communities need. We need a wise and inspiring vision of medicine around which we all can unite.”

Gunderman came from a family of no physicians, but he has proudly cultivated a great learning environment for his children. There are now four physicians in his family, two of which are his sons: Peter Gunderman, MD, an assistant professor of clinical radiology and imaging sciences, and David Gunderman, PhD, a medical student in the class of 2026, who recently received the United States Public Health Service's prestigious 2025 Excellence in Public Health Award.

“The flame of medicine is flickering,” he said. “We need to ensure that the flame that was once passed to us will be burning even more brightly as we pass it on to our children and grandchildren.”
