NTU Faculty Highlight
Navajo Technical University proudly recognizes Carlos R. Paez-Paez, originally from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Juárez in 2006, followed by a Master of Science in Mathematics Education at Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez in 2009. Dr. Paez-Paez later completed his Ph.D. in Teaching, Learning, and Culture with a STEM concentration at The University of Texas at El Paso in 2014.
"My background blends electrical engineering, math education, and STEM concepts," Dr. Paez-Paez observed. "This interdisciplinary path strongly influences my instructional style, driving a continuous effort to connect abstract theories with practical technical applications and broader scientific fields."
Reflecting on his tenure, a significant milestone includes more than eleven years dedicated to STEM education at Navajo Technical University. Over this time, Dr. Paez-Paez has guided students at various levels while actively supporting curriculum enhancements, service efforts, research, and institutional teaching projects.
He has played an active role in key curriculum updates within the Mathematics Department, aiding in revisions to certificate and associate programs, refining course offerings, and drafting plans for a future Bachelor of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education. These efforts help create structured pathways for individuals pursuing careers in math and teaching.
“My involvement also encompasses advanced study at NTU. Upon joining the Graduate Faculty in 2026, I will participate in updating the Graduate Catalog and Graduate Handbook, furthering ongoing conversations about graduate education,” Dr. Paez-Paez commented.
For Dr. Paez-Paez, serving on the faculty at Navajo Technical University has been central to his ongoing growth as an educator and scholar. One of the most rewarding aspects of his teaching is helping students gain confidence in mathematics and appreciate how the subject applies to academic pursuits, professional careers, and everyday life.
Drawing on his background in both engineering and mathematics education, he shapes an instructional approach that emphasizes accessibility and clarity. He designs learning spaces that foster active inquiry, conceptual synthesis, and strong problem-solving capabilities. Driven by the belief that teaching requires continuous improvement, Dr. Paez-Paez regularly investigates new instructional methods and educational technologies to elevate student engagement and learning outcomes.
Having served as a faculty member since January 2015, Dr. Paez-Paez is deeply grateful for his time at NTU. As an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Technology, he has taught diverse student groups, worked alongside dedicated colleagues, and advanced his research. Above all, he finds immense professional satisfaction in helping students build self-efficacy, navigate academic challenges, and unlock their full potential in a field often perceived as difficult.
"I wish to extend my appreciation to my colleagues and peers at NTU. Over the years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with individuals who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to our students and the institutional mission. Their support and shared expertise have significantly contributed to my professional development," stated Dr. Paez-Paez.
He also highlights the crucial role of the student body, whose active engagement underscores the value of higher education and motivates continuous pedagogical enhancement. Moving forward, Dr. Paez-Paez remains dedicated to advancing NTU's mission, supporting student achievement, and strengthening mathematics and STEM education throughout the institution.
Throughout his career at the university, he has consistently balanced teaching, research, and institutional service—including active involvement in the Faculty Congress and university governance—viewing them as complementary pillars of his faculty responsibilities.
Grateful for his experiences with NTU colleagues and students, Carlos looks forward to continuing his support for mathematics and STEM education.
