WCU Mentoring and Persistence to Success

Directions Website

WCU Mentoring and Persistence to Success We provide academic support for all program participants, but we also help with more than academics. https://linktr.ee/WCU.MAPS Plus a lot more.

The university experience can be a challenging one for all students. An experience resulting in graduation often requires a support network that can help students navigate their personal academic journey. At WCU, you'll find the support you need for your specific situation. The Office of Mentoring and Persistence to Success provides services and resources to four groups within the student body:

Students who are first generation college students (parents do not have Bachelor's degrees)
Students who meet income guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
Emancipated youth, formerly homeless or without consistent residence, or aged out of foster care
Students participating in Academic Success Program (ASP)

Polish your study skills or learn how to manage your time effectively and avoid procrastination. Talk to an academic advisor about registration, what classes to take, and how to choose a major or a career. Whether you need personal coaching, help in making the transition to college life, or career advice, we're here for you. See our linktree for more information about our services & programs within our office: https://linktr.ee/wcu_maps

Meet Natalie! Natalie is a First Gen Staff member who works WCU CCESL !

Natalie has some advice for First Gen students: “Take advantage of opportunities both on and off campus, go to that sporting event, volunteer, stop by that exhibit, and join clubs and organizations that fill your cup, not just your resume. Connect with your faculty members, ask questions, and go to office hours. Use resources on campus! Go to tutoring! Don’t be afraid to try new things, actually be afraid, but do it anyway. Learn as much as you can while in college, it goes by fast. Apply for the scholarships, fix your resume, take the headshot, create the LinkedIn, track your involvement, make friends from other disciplines and areas of study. Learn about the different offices on campus and talk to staff, we love to help students and connect you to opportunities!! Check ENGAGE if you ever think there is nothing to do, there is always something to attend, or a trail to walk nearby, or a creek or river or lake to hang out near. Last but not least, believe in yourself, you are here because you belong here and you will do amazing things!”

Meet Emma! RCM Emma, MSW is a First Gen Advocate who is a Residential Case Manager for WCU University Housing!

Her advice to all First Gen students: “Your journey is your own - don’t compare it to others. Your perspective, determination, experiences, and successes are strengths that got you here to WCU. Continue to ask questions & seek help if needed and join organizations of interest. You are here for a reason so lean into your “why” and lean into the small wins.”
