Meeting the Neighbors 👟Walking tour of Dillsboro

Recently, College of Business faculty members had the opportunity to connect with the local community through a walking tour of Dillsboro. The group met several business owners and learned about the unique stories behind their businesses, gaining valuable insights.

During the visit, the group stopped at the Jarrett House , where Isabelle shared the rich history of this treasured local landmark. The experience provided the faculty with a deeper understanding of the community and strengthened connections between the College of Business and the local businesses that contribute to the region's economic and cultural vitality.

🧾Connecting Future Accountants with Industry Leaders✏️

The 2026 Fall Accounting Networking Event brought together talented students and accounting professionals for an evening of meaningful connections, career exploration and professional growth. Students had the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, gain valuable career insights and expand their professional network.

A special thank you to Forvis Mazars, Bernard Robinson & Company, BGW, Carter PC, Gould Killian CPA Group, Canipe Whitney, PC, DMJPS, and the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor, who attended the event.

Events like these help bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace, preparing the next generation of accounting professionals for future success.

WCU’s College of Business’s first Entrepreneur’SHIP 🚢 Experience of 2026 took 11 WCU student crew members and two faculty members, Professor Yue Hillon and Dr. Lane Perry, behind the scenes at Willow Hill Soap Company in Canton, North Carolina.

Entrepreneur’SHIP is designed to take a small crew of outstanding entrepreneurship students into Western North Carolina businesses to look under the hood and learn how they really operate.

The McDowell family introduced us to a brand born in the hardworking mill town of Canton that now reaches markets across the United States. Co-founder Alison McDowell, her whole family, and their dedicated team offered an inside look at managing brick-and-mortar locations, wholesale accounts, and a trade-show sales division.

Two lessons stood out:

1) Be prepared to work harder than you can imagine… and work hard in the ways that are uniquely you.
2) Know your weaknesses and surround yourself with people whose strengths complement them. Self-awareness is critical.

Junior entrepreneurship major Sam Fleming captured the value of the experience:
“The E-SHIP Experience is valuable because it provides a perspective that cannot be demonstrated in a classroom. On our recent trip, I came prepared with questions based on what we have been learning about in ENT325. The responses I received were quite different from what I was expecting.”

Our visit came on the heels of Willow Hill being named Small Business of the Year by the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, a fitting recognition for a family and team doing special things in a special community.
