MAEx program alum Lisa Weissman began her career as a museum-based educator at Antioch, when she took up individualized study and an internship with the Getty Museum. After a stint assisting with social justice programs at the Autry Museum of the American West and additional study in a prestigious graduate museum program in Rome, she is now the Creative Programs Coordinator for the Holocaust Museum LA, where she manages, develops, and implements all of their educational art and memory programming with Title 1 schools. Lisa is now coordinating the museum's Share Our Stories initiative.

As Lisa shared with us, "Share Our Stories connects students with Holocaust Survivors for meaningful dialogue, gallery exploration, and reflective art workshops. The program is designed to encourage students to find personal expression through artistic mediums. Students find common ground with the survivors in our community and find their own strength in the survivors’ experiences and amplify their own voices through art.

The program is provided at no cost to participating classrooms and includes:

A virtual docent-led, customized tour of the Museum.
A virtual survivor speaking engagement in which a Holocaust survivor shares of their experiences before, during, and after the Holocaust.
Virtual art reflection (art materials will be supplied) workshop for students."

See the attached flyer for more information.

Recent MAEx graduate, Janeen Jackson, used her education and degree to extend her responsibilities at LA's well known and prestigious Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, where she now also serves as the school's Equity & Justice Coordinator beyond her role as an Arts Administrator.

In her own words, Janeen is an "Educator, Artist, Community Activist...[who] has spent the last 30 years working to enrich the community and the world through the arts and education." Trained as a professional photographer, she has branched out into community service through the arts and then into education.

Janeen said, "I believe that 'Artivism=Arts+Activism' gives voice to those who don’t think they have a voice, and to those who don’t believe they can be an agent of change.”

This extends to her civic engagement too where, amongst her many projects, she presently serves as an Arts Commissioner for the City of Santa Monica, currently advising for the City's latest Belmont project (https://www.santamonica.gov/arts/belmar).

As quoted in press for the project, Janeen notes, “This historic project offers our community the opportunity to have informed conversations about the systematic changes that are needed to create equity. The story of Belmar has been pushed to the side for generations, so it is my hope that this project will begin to offer some measure of healing for our Black Santa Monica residents... The narrative of eviction and loss is a painful one, but I think that experiencing this artwork will encourage Santa Monicans to step down from a place of comfort and embrace the discomfort that comes from learning the truth about our history. I'm so proud to be a resident of Santa Monica and I'm proud of the efforts that the City is taking to tell the full history of our community.”

Great work!
