Please join Penn Serves LA volunteers in support of Hope in a Suitcase, an organization established to support young people in foster care who are often forced to move frequently.

HIAS provides suitcases so kids don’t have to carry their belongings in black trash bags.

The organization hosts shopping days and various services to bring dignity and joy to young people in the foster care program who face many challenges. We will be assembling art and hygiene kits.

Additional details will follow for those who register. Website: https://www.hopeinasuitcase.org/

Join Penn Serves LA for a morning of habitat restoration at the beautiful Madrona Marsh Preserve! Register from our website in bio!

We will be helping the Friends of Madrona Marsh restore the marsh’s habitat through their Habitat Restoration Program. Volunteers support habitat restoration by removing non-native plants, clearing vegetation, and planting native species to improve conditions for local wildlife such as birds, butterflies, and pollinators.

This is a great way to support the community, connect with nature in the South Bay, and gain hands-on experience in natural history and ecology. It’s also a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet like-minded people, and spend time outdoors. No prior experience is necessary—training and guidance are provided.

Wear: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended (WE LOVE PENN GEAR).
Bring: Work gloves (the marsh has a select number of gloves but please bring your own if you can) and a reusable water bottle (water is available in the Nature Center).
Tools: All tools are provided, but volunteers should come prepared to work outdoors.
Age: Open to ages 10 and up. Adult supervision and parental consent is required for children under 18.

Directed by Penn Professor Peter Decherney, Postigo Express is 35-minute documentary about the unflinching work of 1971 Penn alumnus and Basque photojournalist Fernando Postigo.

Through a drawn out and often violent campaign, Basque separatists fought for the right to self-determination in northern Spain from the 1970s through the 2000s. Postigo fearlessly documented the conflict in San Sebastian, daily putting himself on the front lines. Postigo’s powerful photographs reveal the human dimension of a region wrestling with questions of identity, resistance, and reconciliation.

After the film, stay for a Q&A with Peter and Postigo’s daughter, screenwriter Jessica Postigo. Space is limited.

⚠️Trigger Warning: This film contains documentary photographs of the Basque Conflict that include graphic depictions of violence, injured and deceased individuals, and the aftermath of armed struggle and political unrest. Some images may be disturbing or triggering.

This evening features works by award-winning filmmaker, and Penn professor, Peter Decherney exploring the history and resilience of the Abayudaya, a Jewish community in eastern Uganda.
Following a garden reception, the program includes screenings of an Abyudaya music video and the short documentaries Days Between Rest (15 min) and The Cave Synagogue (8 min). These films document the community’s experience practicing Judaism under political repression and preserving religious life across generations, offering an intimate portrait of faith sustained through adversity and global connection.
A conversation will follow with filmmaker Peter Decherney and Abayudaya Rabbi Shoshana Nambi, moderated by Rabbi Dr. Norbert Weinberg. They will address the historical context of the Abayudaya, contemporary Jewish life in Uganda, and broader questions of identity, memory, and cultural survival. The evening concludes with an audience Q&A..
Reception begins at 6 p.m. Welcome remarks start at 7 p.m., followed by the screenings and conversation.
Presented in part by the University of Pennsylvania.

Seating is first come, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

Did you know there are 310,000 alumni around the world—and you’re part of it? 🌍

Big thank you to the UPenn Alumni Regional Clubs for making the trip to the West Coast for the Volunteer Leadership Retreat 🙌

It was amazing to share alumni resources, highlight programs, and bring campus closer to how we engage with our alumni here in Los Angeles.

Exciting updates are on the way—stay tuned and thanks for being part of the Penn Club LA community ✨

Winner of “Best Comedy” in the 2024 United Solo Fest, Gaslighting is My Love Language is about being gaslit for 13 years by a character actor husband. Fresh off sold-out runs at Edinburgh, Leicester and Hollywood Fringe, the show was featured in the UK Times, who wrote, “Their marriage was like the Exxon Valdez supertanker leaking gallons of oil in your home.” Fielding Edlow is an intimacy-avoidant, charming woman who just wanted a boyfriend and ended up in a 13-year marriage or “light hostage situation.” It’s a 21st century Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf but instead of parlor games and Dewars, it’s words with friends and microdosing sheet cakes.

“Fielding Edlow’s Gaslighting is my Love Language is a brutally honest, unapologetically explicit, and immensely entertaining hour of comedy.” - NorthWest (Edinburgh) ****

“Fielding with this brilliant, fearless, biting victory monologue about becoming who she always was all along. She packed the theatre the night I was there and the audience was eating her up…so to speak. This is brazen bold material. Vulgar, funny and exquisitely truthful.” - NoHo Arts District
