Saturday Nights at the Fujitsu Planetarium - De Anza College We have Family Astronomy Shows and Laser Shows. Tickets can be purchased online and at the door.

Astronomy Shows include: The Magic Tree House, Astronaut, Black Holes and many more. Laser Shows include: Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. The Fujitsu Planetarium at De Anza College is the largest school Planetarium west of the Rocky Mountains and since our renovation, the Fujitsu Planetarium is one of the most modern Planetariums in the world. The Planetarium is shared by the College Astronomy and Community Education Departments. When used as a classroom, it serves over 2700 college students per year. The Astronomy program at De Anza is the largest in the California State Community College System. Community Education oversees the school field trips to the planetarium and weekend public shows as well as many special events. About 30,000 community members, including students from
pre-school through high school, attend these shows and events every year.

Quick! Can You Find Mercury?

Right around sunset on October 12, a thin crescent Moon will join the hunt for one of the most elusive planets in our sky: Mercury!

Mercury will be at greatest eastern elongation, meaning it reaches its greatest apparent distance from the Sun in the evening sky. That makes this a great opportunity to try to spot the speedy little planet hiding low along the horizon.

But there’s a catch: Mercury is notoriously tricky to find. It never wanders very far from the Sun, so it only appears briefly around sunset or sunrise, often low in the sky and lost in the glow of twilight.

🔭 Your challenge: Find a clear view of the western horizon, look toward the sunset, and see if you can spot Mercury before it disappears into the twilight! The Moon will help, Mercury is just to the right.

A Cosmic Arch Across the October Sky!

On the morning of October 5, look toward the eastern sky for a beautiful lineup of celestial objects stretching in a graceful arc: Castor, Pollux, Mars, the Moon, Jupiter, and Regulus!

Why do they appear to form such a neat line? They’re all located close to the ecliptic, the imaginary path across our sky that traces the plane of Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The Moon and planets travel close to this path, while many of the zodiac constellations lie along it too.

So as you look across the sky, you’ll see this cosmic parade following the ecliptic from one familiar celestial landmark to another. It’s a wonderful reminder that our Solar System is, quite literally, a place where things tend to line up!

As the Sun slips below the horizon on August 20, look to the southeastern sky where the Moon glides beside Antares, the brilliant ruby heart of the Scorpion.
