Hello Visual Arts UNG Dahlonega faculty! We gathered on the Hansford Hall porch today for a lovely lunch organized by our Associate Department Head Vivian Liddell, who made beans and rice for us. Paul Dunlap brought a fabulous homemade bread. Most of us were there and we had a great time! Here's to more of these chill gatherings! We are grateful and very lucky to work with each other.

🎬 A fresh look for HAWK Cinema! 🦅

In case you missed our recent emails 🤭 you’re invited to join us for a brief reception celebrating the new visual identity of HAWK Cinema!

Four UNG Visual Arts design interns were invited to reimagine the look of this established film program, bringing fresh perspectives and creative energy to its identity. Stop by to see the new look, recognize our student designers, and enjoy some light refreshments and good company.

Everyone is welcome! Students, faculty, staff, and the UNG community—we hope to see you there!

Thank you, Bryan Garris, for speaking at the third "open class day" for ART 3500 Visual Literacy and Communication. The students, community members, and Ana Pozzi Harris really enjoyed your talk and had lots of good questions.

For this talk, Bryan discussed his experience documenting political demonstrations for many years and in many cities. And then we got some extra special views of Dahlonega during politically intense moments and during the Christmas and festival seasons. Thank you for bringing your equipment and explaining the various visual results that each camera offers, and for your thoughtful reflections about your interactions with your photographed subjects. Ana Pozzi Harris hopes we can repeat this event next year!

Y'all - Bryan Garris is an incredible image maker. Ana Pozzi Harris highly recommends you take a look at his Instagram: havefilm_willtravel
and attend some of the Dahlonega Arts Alliance events he participates in.

Besides taking film photos with multiple cameras and developing them in his personal darkroom, Bryan mats, frames, prices, sells, and discusses his prints with customers. Bryan is a walking example of how to make the most of one's craft and gracefully navigate the real job of being an artist. Thank you!

Huge shoutout to UNG Art faculty Dylan Weiler and Jeff Repko for pulling off an incredible panel at New York Comic Con! 🎙️✨

The absolute best part? They didn’t go at it alone—they brought UNG Visual Arts students right up to the official table to share the stage! 🤖🎨🛡️

Fabulous first day of the 2026 Bayeux Tapestry Replica Exhibit! We had close to 300 visitors! Thank you especially to Tommye Scanlin, who taught visitors about the difference between ancient stitching and tapestry weaving, and to John Clements, a specialist in Medieval weapons, who gave demonstrations of how fighting was done back then.
Thank you to my faithful interns: Sophie Reale, Laura Hanna, Merritt Pennick, and Lucy Basso. Sophie is my intern for this project and has helped train the docents and done most of the graphic design work. Laura was our photographer today and will be posting on social media. Merritt designed and made our t-shirts, and Lucy assisted Tommye with her set up and take down today.
We had five student docents leading tours yesterday, working in teams: Julia Wells and Madeline Quinlan, Janelle Real and Amari Urdaz, and Caleb Heddings, who partnered with me.
It was so fun to lead tours and interact with our visitors, most of whom came drawn by the New York Times article, some all the way from Alabama and Tennessee. Yay! Congrats to all on a job well done!
More tours on Monday and Tuesday, 9 am to 4 pm at the UNG - University of North Georgia Convocation Center, 180 Alumni Drive, Dahlonega. This event is free and open to the public and no appointments are necessary. Just come and enjoy the show!

Thank you to Julie and Steve Leibel for inviting Miriam and Dr. Ana Pozzi Harris to lunch, and congratulations to Miriam for completing a commission for them! Take a look at this lovely mosaic, made from hand-cut glass pieces and ceramic shards, that Miriam created at the entrance to their residence in Dawsonville, GA. The mosaic is the base for their Bottle Tree sculpture. Steve will also acquire the sculpture that Miriam showed in "I Am Multicolored" at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center and commission a second outdoor sculpture from Miriam.
Miriam Kim is a graduating senior in the B.F.A. Visual Arts, with a focus on Sculpture and Ceramics. Upon graduation this Fall, she intends to apply for artists' residences in Sweden or Korea. Congratulations again, and thank you, Julie and Steve, for supporting Miriam through her journey at UNG. Department of Visual Arts - UNG

Thank you to Billy Roper, Clayton Santiago Artist, and Emily Whelchel DeFoor for sharing their journey with us during the Bob Owens Exhibition Alumni Panel this past Thursday evening. It was an honor to have you here at UNG Dahlonega, helping us remember Bob's impact as a mentor, friend, and teacher, and offering words of wisdom to our students. The audience enjoyed Billy's humor, Clayton's honesty, and Emily's savviness. We are lucky to count on your friendship, and we look forward to your next visit! Thank you to all the audience members, the questions, and the conversation after the event!

The UNG Department of Visual Arts celebrated the closing of I Am Multicolored: The Human Connection with a wonderful reception and a presentation by UNG alumna Olivia Tinsley on Lenn Redman’s What Am I?

What Am I? is a groundbreaking 1970s illustrated poem and lithographic series exploring the diversity and unity of humanity. The work inspired the concept for this juried exhibition, co-sponsored by the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, the Redman Family Foundation, and the University of North Georgia.

Congratulations to Olivia on her excellent presentation and on the culmination of an eighteen-month research project. The Department is especially grateful to Mark Redman for supporting Olivia’s research and providing enriching opportunities throughout her journey, and to Nairika Cornett and the Quinlan Visual Arts Center for hosting the exhibition and organizing two wonderful receptions.

This project also reflects the tremendous support of the UNG community. Special thanks to Josie Vrooman Toney, Bobbi Larson, and Alex Kraft, whose work and enthusiasm helped bring the project together, as well as our College of Arts and Letters leadership: Jen Graff, Elisabeth Burgess, and Chaudron Gille. We were delighted to have Jeff Marker, Alicia Marker, Esther Morgan-Ellis, Daniel Johnson, Jordan Mund, and Darcy Hayes join us for the closing celebration.

We are also grateful to Stewart Swanson and the Foxfire Museum for attending and bringing a wonderful gift of folk pottery aprons for our ceramics students, to Jim Thomas of the Sautee Nacoochee Center for his continued mentorship of Olivia, and to Mary Hemmer, Executive Director of the Northeast Georgia History Center, for joining us.

A special thank-you goes to the participating artists who attended the closing reception: Leylis Miraval Ramos, Jane Hemmer, and John Hemmer. The June opening reception also brought together UNG student artists Lucy Basso, Madeline Blanchard, Madelyne McDaniel, Madeline Engel, Miriam Kim, Kenya Perez, and Maria Elvira Velasquez; alumni Megan Allen, Marsha Hopkins, and Alex Sexton; and Associate Professor of Drawing and Painting Craig Marshal Wilson.

This exhibition created meaningful opportunities for students and alumni to participate in their first national-reach juried exhibition, while also strengthening connections among UNG, regional arts organizations, artists, alumni, and the broader community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make I Am Multicolored: The Human Connection such a memorable and meaningful project. We look forward to many more collaborations that connect our students and alumni with the vibrant arts community of North Georgia and beyond! 🎨
