Cadet Leadership Academy at University of North Georgia

Before the No. 1 hits and a career that took him around the world, Shawn Mullins ’91 was a cadet at North Georgia and a member of the Golden Eagle Band.

Now, he’s coming back home. Mullins will perform at UNG on Oct. 16 in a special concert benefiting the Golden Eagle Band.

A few weeks ago, UNG held its first contracting ceremony, marking the commitment of cadets to serve in the US Army and Army National Guard.

Standing on the Drill Field, they took another step toward becoming Army leaders and carrying forward a legacy of service. Surrounded by family, friends and fellow cadets, the cadets took the oath, and received their contracting tabs.

To honor those who gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, cadets dedicated their morning PT session to remembering the events of 9/11.

The session began with a 2-mile run around campus, followed by 343 repetitions of exercises, honoring the 343 firefighters who lost their lives that day.

Together, they honored the courage and sacrifice of those who responded that day, as well as all those who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

We remember.

20 North Georgia cadets commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army and Georgia Army National Guard.

They came to North Georgia as cadets. They leave as officers and Leaders of Character.

9/11: A Day We Will Never Forget

Twenty-five years later, we remember those we lost, honor the first responders who ran toward danger and recognize the brave men and women who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

Their courage, sacrifice and commitment continue to inspire the generations who choose to serve, protect and lead.

As we approach 25 years since 9/11, we pause to remember the lives lost, honor those who answered the call to serve and reflect on the lasting impact of that day.

UNG’s annual Remembrance Ceremony will take place Thursday, September 10 at 6:30pm on the Gen. William “Lipp” Livsey Drill Field.

Col. Christian Durham, UNG’s new professor of military science and a 2001 graduate, will deliver the keynote address as we honor those we lost and recognize those who continue to serve.

Col. Christian Durham graduated from the University of North Georgia (UNG) and commissioned as an Infantry second lieutenant in May 2001. Four months later, the Sept. 11 attacks changed the trajectory of the nation and his career.
