Sparking inspiration at Mt. Yonah Elementary school and Robinson Elementary School, Dr. Cristina Washell, Associate Dean of Student Support Services, shone bright during the GAPRE-K Week events! It was an honor to witness her passion in action. The heartwarming moment featuring Dr. Washell with three teachers, all former students of hers who graduated from the ELE-SPED program and are now thriving at Robinson Elementary School, is a testament to the power of empowering educators.

In our ECSP 3003 Classroom Management course, junior students explored the concept of engaging instruction through the utilization of makerspaces, where they collaborated to create, build, problem-solve, tinker, and explore using various everyday and technology materials.

As part of the Three Little Pigs Challenge, students designed and constructed houses for their 'pig' using materials such as popsicle sticks, toothpicks, straws, marshmallows, cups, cupcake holders, and string. Subsequently, the 'wolf' - simulated by a hair dryer - attempted to demolish the structures.

Notably, all of the houses withstood the wolf's gusty winds.

Celebrating UNG Graduate Dr. Iyonka Strawn-Valcy!

The University of North Georgia College of Education is proud to celebrate Iyonka Strawn-Valcy, who will receive the 2026 Nikolai Khaladjan Award for International Innovation from the American Association of University Administrators (AAUA)!

The award recognizes her doctoral dissertation, “The Strategist Behind the Strategy: Investigating Senior International Officers’ Leadership Roles in U.S. Research Universities,” completed at the University of North Georgia.

Adding to this exciting news, Dr. Strawn-Valcy was recently appointed Associate Provost of International Education and Global Programs at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)!

Her accomplishments reflect the power of research, leadership, and a commitment to advancing international education. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and her continued impact on higher education. Congratulations, Dr. Strawn-Valcy!

Alumni Spotlight: Meet Jazmin Gosen

As a first-generation Mexican American, I know how powerful it can be to see someone who looks like you doing something you once wondered if you could do. I hope my students see me and think, “If she can do it, I can do it too.”
More than anything, I hope they remember how I made them feel.

One project I’m especially proud of is our culture and environmental fashion show. Every year, my 7th graders study environmental and water issues in countries like China and India, and then they get to bring what they’ve learned to life through fashion.

Students research traditional clothing styles, textiles, and cultural influences and then design and create full outfits inspired by those cultures using only recyclable materials. They have to think creatively about how everyday materials can be transformed into something meaningful and beautiful.
