Webinar: Substance Use, the Brain, and the College Experience: Understanding Risks, Myths, and Healthy Coping
The UNT Dallas School of Behavioral Health and Human Services and the Kinnect Wellness Network are continuing their free Brown Bag Community webinar series for 2026! Our second Spring presentation is titled "Substance Use, the Brain, and the College Experience: Understanding Risks, Myths, and Healthy Coping and will be held on Friday, March 13th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. CST
This training explores how substance use interacts with the developing brain, dispels common myths around substance use, and discusses the differences between experimentation, risky use, and dependence. This session will highlight psychological factors that contribute to substance use while offering practical, healthy coping strategies such as mindfulness, sleep routines, and social support. Participants will learn how to identify red flags of risky behaviors and how to respond in simple, empathetic ways. Overall, this training encourages informed decisionโmaking grounded in awareness and compassion.

Our presenter, Dr. Edna Foster, is a licensed psychologist, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, and Associate Professor with more than 30 years of experience. Her career spans clinical work in substance abuse programs, adolescent mental health, trauma counseling, and juvenile justice. She currently serves as Clinical Manager for the LIFE Project and Families Together Program at ACH Child & Family Services while co-owning Reflections of Reality Therapy and Consulting in Cedar Hill, Texas. Guided by her lived experiences, her mission centers on providing hope, promoting holistic trauma-informed care, and helping individuals find their voice and path toward healing and success.
