On this day in 1942, the Cocoanut Grove supper club was over capacity at more than 1,000 patrons when fire broke out killing 492 people. It is believed that the fire started in ceiling decorations and quickly spread to the false ceiling and raced through the packed club. Within five minutes flames and smoke had spread to the entire nightclub. Escaping the inferno was extremely difficult as many exits were either bolted shut, boarded up, or hidden in non-public areas. The main entrance, a revolving door, was rendered useless as bodies piled up, jamming it shut.

The tragedy led to fire code reformation and increased safety standards across the country. It became illegal to have only one revolving door as a main entrance/exit without having outward opening panic doors on either side. Flammable decorations and inward-swinging exit doors in public buildings were also banned. 📸 credit Boston Fire Historical Society

Over the past few months, the UL FSRI team has been conducting experiments for the "Study of Fire Service Residential Home Size-up and Search & Rescue Operations" project. This recent experiment was designed to evaluate the impact of an interior search ahead of suppression with a bedroom fire in a post-flashover state. Door control was initiated by closing the front door following entry to the structure of the simulated search crew.

As part of the 20 experiment series with funding provided by Department of Homeland Security/FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency AFG program, the results from this series will be analyzed in conjunction with the technical panel over the next several months.

Free Access is now available online for the first edition of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1700, Guide for Structural Fire Fighting.

The NFPA 1700, Guide for Structural Fire Fighting is the first document connecting fire dynamics research and its application to strategy, tactics, and best practices for firefighters in controlling fires within a structure.

The first edition was prepared by the Technical Committee on Fundamentals of Fire Control Within a Structure Utilizing Fire Dynamics and acted on by the NFPA membership during the 2020 NFPA Technical Meeting.

Since 2015, members of the UL FSRI team, Advisory Board, and Technical Panels have been part of this committee that has been responsible for documents relating to techniques and methods used in firefighting based on accepted scientific principles and research in the field of fire dynamics. We are honored to conduct our research alongside fire service leaders who are helping the results reach the streets around the world.

An on-line interactive training course to support the implementation of NFPA 1700 into department SOGs/SOPs is currently under development. This project is led by the Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) with collaborative support from others including UL FSRI and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and funded by Department of Homeland Security / FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

We look forward to seeing the impact that connecting research to practice will have on firefighter safety and how departments will integrate this guide into their SOGs/SOPs.

Be safe this Halloween.

Ghosts and goblins and ghouls, oh dear;

2. Cover with a clean, dry cloth.
3. Do not apply creams, ointments, sprays or other home remedies.
4. Get medical help right away by calling 911 or the fire department.

We must instill a culture of safety and responsibility from an early age. The future of the fire and emergency services will see tremendous growth of community risk reduction programs and divisions.

Children are spending more time at home these days. Talk to them about fire safety and teach them that lighters and matches are tools for adults and not toys.
