SMU Lyle has named Donghai Wang as the William T. Solomon Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Wang is an internationally recognized researcher whose work spans advanced energy-storage technologies, next-generation batteries and clean energy.

As chair, he will lead the department’s academic, research and faculty efforts while helping shape the next chapter of Mechanical Engineering at SMU Lyle.

What happens when engineering, mathematics and creativity come together?

For SMU Lyle junior Alexis Stus, the answer is research into one of our most complex systems: the human brain.

As part of SMU’s NSF-backed Modeling and Computations for Complex Systems summer research program, Alexis used mathematical modeling to explore the neurocircuitry associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Her journey to engineering is just as interdisciplinary as her research. After originally studying dance and choreography, Alexis discovered an interest in computation that eventually led her to SMU Lyle, where she now studies electrical and computer engineering and mathematics with a minor in cognitive science.
