New research published in MIT Sloan Management Review challenges the assumption that organizations must choose between efficiency and resilience.

Analyzing millions of airline journeys, SMU Cox Associate Professor Vishal Ahuja and coauthors reveal that highly optimized systems, while cost-effective, can become fragile, amplifying disruptions and leaving customers to bear the consequences.

The takeaway: efficiency and resilience aren’t opposing forces - they’re a design choice.

Their research offers three actionable strategies for organizations across industries:
✔️ Measure what truly matters to customers
✔️ Deploy buffers strategically rather than uniformly
✔️ Design customer options that balance revenue with risk

The implications extend far beyond airlines, touching supply chains, healthcare systems and any organization navigating complexity at scale.

👏 Congratulations to Associate Professor Ahuja for this impactful work, helping leaders rethink how to build systems that are both high-performing and resilient.

Dallas is building momentum as a hub for life sciences and health innovation.

At the latest Southwest Venture Forum, co-hosted by the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship and the Spears Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership at SMU Cox, industry leaders shared why North Texas is uniquely positioned for growth.

Speaking to moderator JR Garcia (MBA '11), VP of Investments at Green Parks & Golf Ventures, Bunker Curnes, CFO of Mobia Medical, described Dallas as “a connector,” noting that while it may not yet be a traditional hub, its collaborative spirit and “why not us?” drive to be in the Top 5 are accelerating progress. Katie Cashman Rogers, VP of Startup and Innovation at JP Morgan Chase, echoed that optimism, pointing to the region’s “astronomical potential” and strength in applied technology and manufacturing.

The forum also offered practical guidance for founders - from building mission-driven teams to staying focused on the end user and planning for scale, and featured pitches from emerging entrepreneurs, Kris Klein of Pollen Sense and Bear Givhan of Earthview.

“Y’all Street” is no longer just a headline. With more than 15 publicly traded companies approved or completed to reincorporate in Texas since spring 2024, and 10 more shareholder votes on Texas reincorporation expected in the next 30 days, we’re experiencing a live case study in corporate governance, capital markets and the future of business law.

At the center of the conversation is the SMU Corporate Governance Initiative (CGI), an interdisciplinary effort that connects the expertise of SMU Cox School of Business and SMU Dedman School of Law to the governance issues shaping boards, investors, policymakers, and markets.

Case in point: during ExxonMobil’s closely watched redomestication debate, thought leadership from SMU Cox Professor of Practice and SMU CGI Executive Director Shane Goodwin, PhD, and SMU Dedman Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Law Christina Sautter was part of the public governance conversation.

Each had an analysis published on Columbia Law School’s Blue Sky Blog, and as a result, Sautter’s work was cited by the New York City Comptroller and Goodwin’s work appeared in ExxonMobil’s response to shareholders.

That is the power of applied research with real-world relevance: SMU CGI and its faculty are contributing to the debates business leaders are watching in real time.

The SMU Cox School of Business recently celebrated exceptional Finance students through two memorable events hosted by the Don Jackson Center for Financial Studies and the EnCap Investments & LCM Group Alternative Asset Management Center.

At the Don Jackson Center Graduation Luncheon, held in the Crow Library, 14 Don Jackson Associates were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement, integrity and leadership. Each honoree received an engraved crystal bowl commemorating their accomplishments. In a meaningful moment of appreciation, students also presented retired professor Donald F. “Don” Jackson (B.B.A. ’63) with a Mustang statuette, honoring his enduring legacy and lasting impact on the Cox School community.

Later the same day, the Alts Graduation Reception at Old Parkland brought together graduating seniors, families, faculty and industry leaders to celebrate the success of students in this highly rigorous program. Each graduate was individually recognized, with full-time job placements announced, and received an engraved crystal paperweight as a tribute to their achievement.

We proudly congratulate these outstanding students and extend our sincere gratitude to the faculty, alumni and supporters whose dedication helps make these celebrations - and student success - possible.

The inaugural SMU Cox Invitational Real Estate Challenge, envisioned by recent graduates Carl Firch (B.B.A. '26) and Lexie Howell (B.B.A. '26), brought eight of the nation’s top undergraduate real estate programs to Dallas in April for a rigorous, real-world case competition at Old Parkland.

Students tackled a complex case, analyzing a distressed office asset and developing full investment strategies from acquisition to capital structuring and tenanting considerations.

After an exciting final round, in which the teams from SMU Cox and NYU rose to the top, the Cox School team took first place. Congratulations to: Colin Behrens (B.B.A. '28), Vivaan Gupta (B.B.A. '28), Kelsey Meehan (B.B.A. '26), Cole Records (B.B.A. '27)and Ayaan Sheikh (B.S. '27).

A big thank you to Brian Abbott at ACORE CAPITAL and SMU Cox Clinical Professor Wally Boudry for creating the competition case study, and all the judges and sponsors for making the event possible.
