“If there’s an extra ticket.. would you go with me?”
SMU Film & Media Arts finishes off its student-curated film series by Hunter Lento and Daniel Seo on Wong Kar-Wai with In the Mood for Love (2000), a breathtaking portrait of longing, restraint, and the emotions left unspoken. Set in 1960s Hong Kong, the film follows two neighbors who discover their spouses are having an affair, drawing them into a connection built on desire.
How could we forget or not talk about Wong Kar-Wai? His signature style, every frame shimmers with mood and quiet intensity. Rich colors, intimate spaces, these moments stretched in time create a world where every glance carries meaning. This closing film reveals how love can live in hesitation, memory, and the spaces between words.
Featuring unforgettable performances from Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Maggie Cheung, the film remains one of cinema’s most celebrated explorations of missed chances and emotional connection.
Presented in collaboration with SMU Libraries’ G. William Jones Film & Video Collection, this screening will also feature a post-film Q&A with Professor Devon “Vonnie” Smith - SMU Film & Media Arts Department and Professor John Pomara - UTD Art Department, offering insight into the film’s style, and lasting legacy.
