Dallas College Art Department—Brookhaven Campus is proud to announce the opening of “Unframed Unapologetic”, a site-specific group installation featuring the work of student artists under the curatorial direction of Professor Jen Gassiraro . “Unframed Unapologetic” represents a bold departure from traditional watercolor application.

This large-scale collage installation rejects the limits of the frame and the “preciousness” of the medium, instead allowing vibrant, hand-cut botanical forms to sprawl across the gallery’s architecture. The work explores the tension between delicate material and dominant physical presence. Jen Gassiraro guided the cohort through the collaborative assembly process, pushing the artists to consider how individual fragments can develop in to a singular rhythmic environment. Under her direction, the students transformed hundreds of individual watercolors into a sprawling takeover that directly interacts with the gallery space. The show will be on display until May 1st and is located in D128, our Secondary Space Gallery.

Artists included in the show: Sandra Douglas, Theodore Houston, Diana Krompass, Kelaome Kvale, Sung Lee, Young Lee, Judy Parr, Stephen Potter, Gertraud Reed, Judy Shaw, Mary Stack, Renee Taken, Christiane Tunnell, Jim Wright

The Founders’ Foyer Art Exhibit showcases the art of current students enrolled in the Visual Fine Arts Program at Dallas College and its campuses. Art is displayed in the Founders’ Foyer and throughout the Dallas College headquarters. Artists receive a small stipend for each work chosen in the exhibit as well as publicity and an opportunity to sell their work.

Join us next week at Plaza of the Americas for the reception of Stephen Lee’s Elegance of Complexity! The event will take place from 5pm-7pm in our Artspace of the Americas gallery located on the Lobby floor of the POTA. Listen to the journey and inspiration behind Stephen’s steeled forms. 📍600 N Pearl St Dallas, TX

From the artist:
“Visual language is no different from that of sound or taste. When intent registers strongly, primal feeling precedes understanding, as it does with music and food. I am fascinated by and attuned to this part of the craft.

I build as though I’m drawing in space. In forged steel, each hammer strike becomes a mark, not unlike pointillism in painting. Layering and carving mortar becomes its own form of impasto. Steel and mortar are my primary materials because they let me fabricate intuitively, edit freely, and avoid rigidity. This process honors the time and decisions the work lives through, resulting in handmade textures that aim to embody authenticity and vulnerability.”
