Babies do not have to be holding a screen for media to shape their environment.

New research from SMU psychology professor Sarah Kucker, in collaboration with UCLA, examines how background TVs, phones and other media may interrupt the everyday interactions that help support early language development for young children.

The study offers a new way to think about screen time, not just as something children use, but as something happening around them.

Historian and journalist Applebaum and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Will joined moderator Zakaria for a conversation on politics, history and the forces shaping our changing world.

A documentary supported by SMU English's Narrative Now initiative is earning national recognition! "Stalin Boys" won the Documentary Short Grand Prize at Indy Shorts, an Academy Award-qualifying win. It also took the Audience Award and Special Jury Award at SXSW and the Children's Resilience Award for Short Documentary at Sheffield DocFest, and it is now featured as a New York Times Op-Doc. Narrative Now supports filmmakers telling ambitious stories, and this is what that support can look like.

SMU Teaching Professor of French Paola Buckley has received France’s prestigious Ordre des Palmes Académiques for her work advancing French language education and Francophone culture. 🇫🇷

As two of the first Zeff-Friedman fashion media interns, Nicole Kleinknecht '27 and Sophia Knobbe '27 spent the summer living out childhood dreams in New York City. Nicole interned at the Lela Rose headquarters, helping designers prepare for the fall 2026 launch. Sophia interned at Savi Public Relations, where she researched media contacts and planned a mock client event from concept to final details.

SMU Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences professor and historian Ariel Ron has received the 2026 Macarthur Fellowship — one of the most prestigious international honors, recognizing exceptional creativity and accomplishment!

One of just 20 recipients, Ron receives the $800,000 “genius grant” for his research on 19th-century U.S. politics, agriculture and economic development.

SMU Dedman College historian Ariel Ron, Glenn M. Linden Associate Professor of the U.S. Civil War Era and director of the Clements Center for Southwest Studies, has received the 2026 MacArthur Fellowship — an internationally distinguished award and one of the nation’s most prestigious honors recognizing exceptional creativity and accomplishment!

Ron is one of just 20 people nationwide selected for this year’s fellowship. Each recipient receives $800,000 in unrestricted support to pursue their work.

His research on 19th-century U.S. politics, agriculture and economic development is offering new perspectives on the forces that shaped American history — bringing national recognition to the impact of his scholarship.

“Ariel’s scholarship is a wonderful example of what ambitious research can do: take something we think we understand and help us see it in an entirely new way,” Executive Vice President and Provost Rachel Mersey said. “By examining agriculture as a force that shaped American politics, economic development and government institutions, he is bringing new perspective to some of the most consequential periods in our nation’s history. This recognition is richly deserved.”
