When you’re training the next generation of leaders in oral healthcare, it helps to have the example of senior leaders who are already making an impact on the lives of Texans.

Today, Texas A&M College of Dentistry welcomed Regent David Baggett ’81 to our dental outpatient hospital in Dallas. His visit is an opportunity to demonstrate the clinical care that our students, faculty and staff are providing to hundreds of Texans every day, as well as the trailblazing research we conduct to benefit the entire nation.

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas celebrated its White Coat Ceremony this morning, the moment where nearly 150 young men and women become more than students.

Today, they accepted the responsibility that comes with being a healthcare provider. That's what the white coat symbolizes: their willingness to commit to a life of service. A life of putting their patients first. A life of achieving big things, so that they can make their patients healthier and their communities brighter.

These new students - and the families who love and support them - are now part of a dental community whose mentorship and camaraderie will always be there for them. They've joined a family that is proud to stand with them as a force for good in the world.

INSTRUMENT DAY doesn't really do justice to how important this event really is for new dentistry students. Academic excellence got them here, but today is when they start to combine that with technical knowledge, manual dexterity, and clinical experience.

Before our students can start interacting with patients, there will be long hours in the simulation lab developing the skills necessary to treat the most difficult challenges in oral healthcare. It all starts here.

Our faculty and staff, standing together with technical experts in the private sector, will help provide our students the tools for success (in this case literally!), so that they can make our communities healthier. 👍

The next generation of excellence in oral healthcare starts today. This morning, we welcomed our new classes of future Aggie Dentists and Aggie Dental Hygienists to their new college home.

These young men and women are here for a purpose. They're here because they're ready to take on the challenge of making their communities healthier, safer, and brighter. Over the next several years, they'll spend thousands of hours studying, training, practicing, succeeding, failing, and trying again. They will care for thousands of patients, with the supervision and support of our faculty and staff. They will conduct vital research that will lead to advances in oral health practices and technology to help our fellow Texans lead longer, healthier lives.

Yes, that's a lot. But Aggies aren't shy about tackling the hardest jobs. That's what we do. When we stand together, as one of America's premier dental colleges, there's nothing we can't accomplish.

Today, we have close to 200 new servant leaders ready to help us be a force for good.

“Every member of our team stopped.” That team from Texas A&M University College of Dentistry knew 9-year-old Xavier had tooth decay so severe that he would probably wind up in the emergency room. The faculty and students providing dental screenings at Xavier's Dallas school knew right away that he was living with pain that no child should have to endure, and that relieving that pain could cost more than his parents could handle.

So, the Texas A&M Dentistry team took action.

The screening clinic's sponsor, Metrocrest Hospital Authority, stepped up again and funded treatment through our Department of Pediatric Dentistry for the children at Xavier's school with the most severe cases.

Brighter, healthier, communities don't happen without hard work and people who are ready to step up and find solutions to the toughest problems. That's part of our culture at Texas A&M Dentistry, and with partners like Metrocrest standing with us, there's no health problem we can't solve.

For nearly four decades, Dr. Plemons has led with character—mentoring generations of dental professionals and delivering community-centered care and service through her volunteer work with shelters, adoption services, and HIV/AIDS patient care. But her impact doesn't stand alone. She is joined among this year’s nominees by several Texas A&M College of Dentistry alumni plus current and former faculty members - Dr. Chad Duplantis, Dr. Trisha Kimes, Dr. M. Their unique journeys required incredible resilience, and today they are united by a call to service: they have returned to lead the Summer Pre-Dental Enrichment Programs (SPEP) that once helped them succeed, providing mentorship rooted in honor, integrity, and respect.
