After more than three incredible decades at SMU Meadows, including the past 12 years as dean, I have decided to return to the faculty following the conclusion of my service as dean at the end of this academic year.

It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve the Meadows School of the Arts and the broader SMU community as dean. Together, we have expanded academic opportunities, welcomed exceptional faculty and students, invested in our programs and facilities, strengthened connections with Dallas’ vibrant arts community, and broadened Meadows’ impact and national profile.

There is still important work ahead, and I remain fully committed to Meadows in the months to come as we prepare for a thoughtful leadership transition. After a sabbatical, I look forward to returning to the Hilltop as Professor of Music, where I will continue my work as a scholar and teacher while pursuing research, writing and service.

I am grateful for the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who make Meadows such a remarkable community. It has been an honor to lead this school, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the year ahead and to continuing to be part of the SMU Meadows community for years to come.

Congratulations to Temerlin Advertising Institute Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor Dr. Quan Xie, who received two outstanding honors at the 2026 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Annual Conference! 🎉

Dr. Xie received the 2026 AEJMC Advertising Division’s Distinguished Teaching Award, recognizing her sustained excellence in undergraduate advertising education.

She also earned First Place in the AEJMC Advertising Division’s Open Research Competition for “The Anthropocentrism Paradox: How Individual and Brand Frames Intervene with AI Disclosure in Inclusive Advertising,” co-authored with TAI’s Dr. Steven Edwards, Dr. Sidharth Muralidharan, Dr. Carrie La Ferle, and Rachel Rodgers.

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Xie’s dedication to her students, her research, and the field of advertising. Congratulations on these well-deserved achievements!

Here's a throwback to an unforgettable opportunity for our Film & Media Arts students! 🎥

Last year, Meadows welcomed award-winning cinematographer Shana Hagan, ASC, to campus through the Canon University EDU Initiative, giving students the chance to learn from one of the industry's most accomplished visual storytellers.

Over the course of several days, Hagan led workshops, participated in classroom discussions, reviewed student work, and gave a campus-wide talk about her journey behind the camera. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to gain expert knowledge from a cinematographer with decades of experience, all while sharing their love for storytelling!

A huge thank you to Canon for partnering with Meadows to make this incredible experience possible and for investing in the future of visual storytelling. 🎬

Congratulations to Professor Barbara Hill Moore on receiving the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the organization's highest honors. 👏

This well-deserved recognition reflects Professor Hill Moore's extraordinary impact as a performer, educator and mentor, as well as the countless singers whose lives and careers she has shaped. It is especially fitting to see her legacy further honored through the creation of the Barbara Hill Moore Emerging Teaching Artist Award, which will inspire future generations of voice teachers and performers.

I am also incredibly proud of the many Meadows faculty, students and alumni who represented our Division of Music at this year's NATS National Conference, including graduate student Josefina Maldonado, recipient of the 2026 NATS Artist Awards. Their achievements continue to demonstrate the national excellence and leadership of our voice program. Congratulations to Professor Hill Moore and to everyone who represented SMU Meadows with such distinction.
