On Sunday, December 8, 2024 around 11:00 pm, Officer Jacob Candanoza, Badge Number 6190, initiated a traffic stop in the 1600 block of S. State Highway 34.

Officer Candanoza requested a cover unit and units were dispatched. Within moments of this dispatch, the Terrell Police Department Communications Division received two 9-1-1 calls regarding an officer being shot. They then received a radio transmission from a citizen giving the same information. Responding officers were advised of this information, along with Terrell Fire Department and CareFlite being dispatched.

Officers arrived on scene and confirmed an officer had been shot. Medical attention was administered immediately and Officer Candanoza was transported to Baylor Scott and White in Forney. Unfortunately, Officer Candanoza did not survive the injuries sustained.

Officer Candanoza has been a police officer with the Terrell Police Department since July 2024. Our deepest condolences go out to his family as they navigate this tragic time.

New Competency-Based Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice

This new, 100% online, competency-based Criminal Justice degree has been designed specifically for first responders: law enforcement and peace officers with existing work experience, police academy training, or other certifications. You can receive up to 30 semester credit hours for your TCOLE certification. This adult completer degree seeks to provide the last two years of training necessary to obtain an undergraduate degree enabling advancement, promotion and leadership skills in the field of Criminal Justice. Courses are offered in an accelerated format, so students can move swiftly through areas of the course they already have mastery over, and focus more attention on topics that are new and challenging to their existing knowledge base. The courses are self-paced, so students can work according to their own schedule. Students in the BSCJ with an Emphasis in Law Enforcement Leadership develop practical workplace competencies that meet current and future challenges facing first responders today.

Students enroll in a “subscription system” of a minimum of two courses per 7-week term. Tuition is $750 per term (for Texas residents), which includes all fees and textbooks. If students complete their two courses within the 7-week term, they may accelerate into another course for the same flat rate. Students may continue to add courses, one at a time, after they successfully complete their current registrations throughout the term to accelerate their time to degree completion.
