Centre students will be taking part in a worldwide effort to address the leading cause of heart valve disease in children and young adults, rheumatic heart disease.

The program is part of a $15 million initiative funded by the American Heart Association. Centre students will be helping to research public health initiatives in Uganda as part of a team under the direction of Dr. Andrea Zawacki Beaton ’01, professor of pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati and a pediatric cardiologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

“Now, more than 20 years after my professors first gave me chances to learn abroad, I couldn't be more excited to partner with Centre College, through this American Heart Association research network, to give students that same jolt of inspiration," Zawacki Beaton said.

As the nation mourns the passing of celebrated Kentucky author, farmer and environmentalist Wendell Berry, we share this excerpt from the speech he gave at Centre College’s 1978 Commencement, accentuating our connections to one another and the Earth itself.

“The human meaning of this is that we are not, have never been, can never be, alone. There is clearly some comfort in that. But I hope I am making equally clear the difficulty and even the fearfulness that also are in it. No one can act simply in his or her own behalf. Escape either into specialization or into solitude is illusory. If we live in an order that we cannot escape, if we creatures are all “members one of another,” then we cannot act except in each other’s behalf, and indeed in behalf of the whole densely woven globe of connections that we call the Creation or the Universe.”

His address was published in the 2017 book “Wendell Berry and Higher Education: Cultivating Virtues of Place.” Berry served as a writer-in-residence at Centre in 1975 and returned to Centre over the years for public readings, commentary, and as a visiting scholar. These photos were taken during a 2016 visit to talk with students and share a convocation address.

Week 1 of the new school year is in the books. Students are back on campus, filling classrooms, studying abroad, conducting research and working hard in labs

Centre officially welcomed the newest Colonels during Opening Convocation, featuring a keynote address by Charles T. Hazelrigg Professor of Spanish Genny Ballard '91, challenging students to be bold in pursuing transformational experiences and the growth that comes with them.

"Here's my advice to you: Take classes that scare you. Travel somewhere unfamiliar. Talk to people whose lives are nothing like your own," she said.

"One day, years from now, the stories you tell will not be about the morning you earned an A on your chemistry exam. They will be about the terrible decision, the impossible challenge, the unexpected friendship, or the moment you realized you were far more capable than you ever imagined."
