The Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellowship honors emerging leaders who are dedicated to social change and public service with year-long training, mentorship, and networking opportunities. We’re excited to congratulate Komal Pandit ‘28, who will join this year’s cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.

Komal Pandit is a UMass Law student passionate about education, civic engagement, and public service. As the child of immigrants, she believes that understanding one's cultural roots is essential to fostering identity, confidence, and a strong sense of community. Guided in these values, she has served as a poll worker during the 2016 election, Vice President of Philanthropy for her undergraduate sorority, Delta Zeta, and an Alternative Break Graduate Fellow at Suffolk University's Center for Community Engagement. Through UMass Law’s Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, she helped organize a panel on the impact of immigration enforcement on Asian communities. Komal strives to address the root causes of inequity by creating collaborative, informed spaces that empower communities and inspire meaningful, lasting change.

Meet Samantha Angelini ’26, this year's winner of the Jonathan Blake Waxler Prize for Social Justice!

Samantha Angelini, an Integrated Studio Arts graduate, began volunteering at Arnie’s Thrift Shop, a free campus thrift store operated by the Office of Sustainability, and served as Thrift Shop Manager for two years. In this role, she worked closely with the New Bedford Women’s Shelter, My Brother’s Keeper, and used Facebook Marketplace to provide community members with surplus items not commonly used by college students, including baby clothes, household goods, and furniture. She expanded impact beyond the South Coast region by working with organizations to provide seasonal clothing to homeless veterans in the Worcester area, and provided clothing and personal care items to women in Tanzania. Through her mentorship of student employees and volunteers, she promoted sustainability, service, and community care.
