"When people seek out an independent bookstore, they are not solely concerned with the act of purchasing books. Rather, people find themselves in these spaces because they love the idea of an independent bookstore: carefully curated collections of titles furnished by booksellers; the presence of others, both familiar and unfamiliar, walking about the shop with animated curiosity; book clubs, philosophy cafés and community events on Saturday afternoons."
Through career development funding, Dean Rusk International Studies Program funding and support from the International Student Engagement Office, Daniel Lee '28 has explored over 200 independent bookstores across three continents.
Based on these experiences, he now researches best practices to break down transnational barriers for publishers, translators, and bookstores to create greater access to global literature.
Follow Daniel Lee ’28 as he turns a childhood dream of owning an independent bookstore into global research spanning three continents, supported by Davidson College grants, study abroad programs and hands-on internships.
