With Wildcat Weekend behind us, it's back to Verdi and a strong cup of tea.

Since September, our singers have been immersed in one of the most monumental works in the choral repertoire, one never done at Davidson College yet. With just one month until our November 19 performance of Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín, there's still much to refine and bring to life.

You may have heard that this fall the Davidson College Choirs and Orchestra are taking on Verdi’s monumental Requiem. But what is a Requiem? Why this particular work?

This post offers some context for the music, the history of cultural life at Terezín, Rafael Schächter and the prisoner choir he conducted there, and the meaning behind the title Defiant Requiem.

As we begin a new school year, welcoming new and returning students and filling our rehearsal rooms with music again, we are also remembering Dolly and the extraordinary life she shared through song and doing good.

We’re glad to share this performance of her "Light of Clear Blue Morning," arr. Craig Hella Johnson, sung by the Davidson College Chorale in October of 2025, featuring Beckett Ledahl ’27.
With gratitude for Dolly. Here’s to clear blue mornings ahead.
