August is Transgender History Month.
The city of San Francisco began recognizing the month in 2021 to commemorate the August 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riots, where Black and brown trans women, gender-nonconforming people and drag queens started and led a riot against police harassment at Compton’s Cafeteria in the Tenderloin district in San Francisco.
This event is regarded as the first large-scale act of resistance of transgender and q***r individuals against police in the United States–predating the Stonewall Inn Riots by 3 years.
CA Assemblymember Matt Haney introduced the resolution in 2023 to declare Transgender History Month, which passed the measure 58-0.
“As long as there has been a California, there have been transgender people here,” Haney said at a press conference the day the resolution was adopted. “Contributing to their communities, making history, and expanding civil rights, and helping to build a California that is more inclusive and prosperous for everyone.”
Find community and support at the LGBTQIA Resource Center, including their Assistant Director of Trans Advocacy and Student Support (Angel Vogel, she/her), Community Counselor (Mary Schellentrager, she/her), the Gender Affirmation Closet and the Angelina Malfitano Memorial Collection, a library located in the center that features more than 1,000 books covering various LGBTQIA+ and intersecting topics.
