Quantum information science researchers at UC Davis are working toward new ways to simulate some of the most complex problems in physics.

Nathan Gonzalez, a doctoral student, is developing scalable quantum technologies that could simulate the physics of fundamental particles on a compact chip. His research in the R-Lab, led by Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Marina Radulaski, is supported by a UC Noyce Graduate Student Fellowship.

Gonzalez is the sole UC Davis student selected for the fellowship’s inaugural cohort, which includes one doctoral student from each of the five participating UC campuses. Fellows receive up to $150,000 over two years to support their doctoral research, along with opportunities for cross-campus collaboration and professional development.

Three-time engineering alum Diana Gamzina’s company, Elve, has qualified its 100-watt millimeter-wave tube amplifier platform for spaceflight. The technology, which grew from Gamzina’s research in the UC Davis College of Engineering, could enable high-data-rate communications for satellite networks and is expected to be demonstrated in orbit within a year.

As the co-founder and CEO of InSitu Space, Toby Li ’25 is developing Daedalus, a rocket-propelled “hopper” designed to transport cargo across the lunar surface. By flying over craters, slopes and other obstacles, Daedalus could change the lunar transportation landscape, giving scientists quicker access to multiple sites from a single moon landing.

Mingwei Zhang, assistant professor of materials science and engineering at UC Davis, has received a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to investigate local chemical ordering in complex concentrated alloys and how it controls mechanical properties.

The research could help advance the design of high-performance materials for aerospace, defense and energy, while supporting new educational resources to make electron microscopy more accessible to students and researchers.

When UC Davis biomedical engineering students walked into a room full of clinicians at UC Davis Health, they brought prototypes for a medical device designed to safely secure breathing tubes for infants. The project began with an alum’s rough sketch and evolved through collaboration with clinicians, engineers and industry experts.

The result was First Bite, a prototype developed through the students’ senior capstone project. After more than 3,000 hours of work, the team earned the top prize at the 2026 Big Bang! Competition and continues to work toward clinical testing.

We are proud to announce that Aijun Wang, a professor in our School of Medicine's Department of Surgery and in the College of Engineering's Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been appointed director of the School of Medicine’s new Center for Bioengineering in Medicine.

Dr. Wang and his lab are integral in many areas of our research, including as the co-principal investigator of the CuRe Trial, the world's first spina bifida treatment combining fetal surgery with stem cells, and is also working to develop a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Wang is also the principal investigator on grants exploring in-utero treatments for cleft palates and Dup15q syndrome.

“Dr. Wang’s work bridging engineering and medicine, from regenerative therapies to clinical trials, demonstrates the power of collaborative science. We are excited to see how he will continue to build upon the Department of Surgery’s internationally recognized bench-to-bedside research breakthroughs with this new center," said Dean Susan Murin.

The center collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across the School of Medicine, UC Davis and industry partners on translational programs and clinical trials.

Infrared sensors are used in everything from wildfire detection to medical diagnostics, but many advanced sensors require extremely cold temperatures to operate.

UC Davis electrical and computer engineering professors J. Sebastian Gomez-Diaz and William Putnam have developed a new IR sensor that works at room temperature.

The MEMS-based sensor uses radio frequencies to achieve high sensitivity and tunability, potentially opening new applications in medicine, environmental monitoring and consumer electronics.

This federally funded research is supported by the Department of Defense – Army, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Today’s technology relies heavily on silicon, but the next generation of electronics, including wearable sensors and foldable screens, may depend on a different class of materials: organic semiconductors.

UC Davis chemical engineering Ph.D. student Toulik Maitra is using computational modeling to better understand these materials and help accelerate the development of new organic semiconductor technologies.

Through an international collaboration with Germany’s Max Planck Institute, Maitra helped develop a computational framework that more accurately models how organic semiconductors behave at the molecular level. A UC Davis Dissertation Fellowship, awarded by UC Davis Graduate Studies, will allow him to continue this collaboration in the Moulé Lab while advancing his doctoral research.
