UC Landscape Plant Irrigation Trials Photos and trial results featuring low water-use, disease-resistant, pest-tolerant plants

We perform 2-year irrigation trials on perennial landscape plants in order to evaluate their performance on reduced levels of irrigation. We plant in the fall and establish them for at least a full year on regular irrigation. The second spring we begin deficit irrigation at three levels based on percentages of what a turf grass uses, or what is called reference evapotranspiration (ETo). At the end

of the summer we have a good idea of their fitness on low water levels and the lowest level that produces acceptable garden performance. We then pass these recommendations on to the growers and the general public. Growers and breeders interested in entering their plants should contact us by email at:

This is the home of Tom Carruth, world-renowned rose breeder and all-around good human. Sadly, the Eaton fire has taken his and his husband's home of 38 years. With very short notice, they were only able to escape with their cell phones, iPads, medication and a change of clothes. Please help if you can.
