It has been a busy awards season for UC Davis Law Professor Amagda Pérez.

At the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation's (CRLAF) annual gala on Sept. 26, Assemblymember Maggy Krell ’03 surprised Professor Pérez with a California Assembly Resolution. The recognition from the state Legislature highlighted Pérez's leadership as executive director of CRLAF and her advocacy work at the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic.

The annual Luchando Por Justicia Gala, "Honoring Roots, Defending Our Rights," commemorated 45 years of the foundation’s work.

Recently, The Sacramento Bee recognized Pérez as one of its 2026 Change Makers and will honor Pérez, and the rest of the 2026 Change Makers class, at a gala on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Sacramento.

Recently, our students had the opportunity to visit the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento building for a firsthand look at the American legal process! They sat in on live court cases and met with Judge Allison Williams, gaining valuable insight into how the U.S. judicial system operates in practice.

In the lecture, “The Crucial Role of Tribes in American Conservation,” Professor Kevin Washburn (UC Berkeley School of Law) will explore the "land back" movement, tribal co-management of natural resources, and the relationship between tribes and conservation organizations.

Washburn is a scholar of federal Indian law, the co-editor-in-chief of the Cohen Handbook of Federal Indian Law, and former Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Today, we commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution and reflect on the principles that continue to shape our democracy and legal system.

The Constitution provides the foundation for the Rule of Law; a system in which laws guide government action, individual rights are protected, and disputes can be resolved through an independent judiciary.

These principles are not limited to history books or courtrooms. They influence our everyday lives and remind us of the shared responsibility to understand, uphold, and participate in our civic institutions.

California Lawyers Association is proud to support the legal profession’s role in advancing the Rule of Law and strengthening the communities we serve.

California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District Associate Justice and longtime UC Davis Law Visiting Lecturer Shama Mesiwala ’98 will receive the Distinguished Alum Award. Dana Cruz ’16, a Judicial Council of California attorney and California State Guard captain, will be recognized with the Rising Star Alum Award.
