Research Training Group Opportunity (2017-2018)

The UC Davis Department of Statistics houses the NSF funded Research Training Group (RTG). A vital component of the RTG program is for undergraduates to get exposed to research in statistics by learning techniques for approaching scientific problems from a statistical point of view. Undergraduate students will also get an exposure to more non-traditional statistical topics that often are not addressed in standard undergraduate classroom settings.

The undergraduate portion of the RTG is a two quarter program (winter and spring) where students work in small groups on a research project. The projects are supervised by faculty and graduate student mentors. The projects for the 2017-2018 academic year are listed below. At the end of the year, participants are required to present their projects to their peers. Funding is available to eligible participants (citizens, permanent residents or eligible non-citizens), but all participants are eligible to receive academic credit by signing up for STA 199.

Applications for the 2017-2018 academic year are due Monday, November 6th. Detailed information about the application process is listed below.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that the winners of this year's Data Mining Cup, an international competition specifically for college students in data mining, are a team of PhD students in Statistics at UC Davis: Minjie Fan, Nana Wang, Qi Gao, Hao Ji, Jilei Yang and Chunzhe Zhang.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Hao Ji and Nana Wang were at the final event today in Berlin, Germany, and it was announced that their team was ranked #1 out of 120 from around the world. Please join us in congratulating our students on this amazing acheivement.

PETER G. HALL
We are deeply saddened to announce that Distinguished Professor Peter G. Hall passed away on January 9th at hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Peter held a joint appointment between UC Davis and the University of Melbourne, and was among the most widely published and highly regarded statisticians in the world.
The Department of Statistics offers its deepest sympathies to Peter's family, friends and colleagues at this time.
