UC Davis English Welcome to the official Department of English page at UC Davis! Who is Jack Kerouac? Maya Angelou? William Shakespeare? And why should you know them?

English majors study some of the world's finest and most influential works of English language literature in their historical, artistic, and cultural contexts. The English Major at UC Davis prepares students in analysis and effective debate and provides them with intensive training in critical writing - all skills important to professional success. Students in the major choose one of two emphases:

Creative Writing or Literature, Criticism, and Theory. The flexibility of the major accommodates individual interests in historical periods, critical theories, major authors, ethnic and multicultural literatures, and the relation of literature to complementary disciplines such as environmental studies and film criticism.
