Global Tea Institute for the Study of Tea Culture and Science, UC Davis

Global Tea Institute for the Study of Tea Culture and Science, UC Davis Global, Intellectual & Cultural Exploration of Tea; fosters teaching and research.

The Global Tea Initiative for the Study of Tea Culture and Science at UC Davis is driven by the long history and cultural importance of tea beginning in Asia and spreading to almost every continent in the world; the dearth of tea-related scholarship in most disciplines; our campus’s wide-ranging expertise in the humanities and social sciences which we bring to bear on tea in Asia, Africa, Europe,

and the Americas; and our complementary campus strengths and research traditions in nutrition and agricultural sciences. The Global Tea Initiative fosters a teaching, research, and outreach effort meant to involve the whole campus, in addition to regional, national, and international partnerships. UC Davis will become a global resource for tea and tea-related studies in agriculture and health and be the world’s leader in tea-related studies in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

Call for Papers: GTI’s 12th Annual Colloquium, Where Ritual Meets Research: Tea Health and Wellness, Proposal Deadline 8/31/2026
Event date: January 28, 2027.

GTI Colloquia enable networking opportunities between researchers in science, the humanities and the social sciences, those engaged in the food and beverage industry and community members, thus providing a vibrant atmosphere for collaboration and learning across disciplines. They regularly draw audiences of about 400–600 people from across campus, the region, the US, and the world. Presentations should reflect specialized knowledge while remaining accessible to a broad audience.

We welcome proposals that take any approach from the humanities and social sciences, to the sciences and health, to business and farming, and from anywhere in the world. All must address the colloquium's theme: Where Ritual Meets Research: Tea Health and Wellness. We aim for a mix of scholarly papers on culture and science (broadly conceived), which together will present a representative global perspective. All proposals must be for previously unpublished work.

NB: Papers will also be considered for inclusion in a peer-reviewed anthology in GTI’s book series Global Tea Studies (Brill).

Submissions should consist of a proposal (maximum 300 words) and a CV. including your job/academic affiliation and job title (if any) in your proposal.

Send proposals to [email protected].
Subject line should include “GTI #12 proposal submission”

Notification of acceptance of papers will be sent out around October 1, 2026.
