New peer-reviewed research co-authored with colleagues at UC Davis confirms what ranchers in northeastern California have been saying for years: wolves are feeding heavily on cattle. Released today in PLOS One, our DNA analysis of wolf s**t collected from the Lassen and Harvey pack territories found that cattle were by far the most frequently detected prey item. And the impacts don't stop at depredation. In our companion study, we found that wolf presence is causing significant and measurable stress in cattle, with potential real consequences for herd productivity and ranch economics. My bills, AB 1673 and AB 1722, provide practical tools to help livestock producers protect their animals while supporting responsible wildlife management. I’m also fighting for critical funding for wolf depredation and additional resources for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife—because right now there is ZERO funding in the state budget dedicated to wolf depredation. In fact, the Governor proposed $1 million in the May Revision, and the Legislature removed it from the final budget.

🌾🐄 Rural communities are bearing the cost of this growing crisis. It's time for policymakers to hear directly from the people living it every day.

UC-Berkeley and UC Cooperative Extension are seeking input from livestock producers and interested parties who live in California on the future of wolf-livestock compensation.
