Student Spotlight! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

Meet Keerthan Suresh from Bangalore, Karnataka, India, Keerthan is pursuing master's in computer science at Wright State University and also working as an International Student Support Advocate at UCIE. Inspired by the flexibility to build a personalised master's program, he chose Wright State to shape his academic journey. According to him, the Must-Visit place in Bangalore is "Church Street". His Favourite Dish is "Masala Dose" that a thin crispy crepe made from fermented rice and lentils that can be filled with different batters, but he likes to fill it with potatoes. His Favourite Native Phrase is Namaskara! โ€“ It means โ€œGreetingsโ€.

Keerthan's advice to new students is to explore the campusโ€”there's always something new to discover! His ideal weekend is simple: hanging out with friends and playing sports. One of the biggest cultural surprises he noticed here people drink iced water no matter the season! Studying abroad has taught him the value of living independently, earning his own money, and managing financesโ€”lessons that will stay with him for life. It also helped him discover something unexpected skill that he can cook! If he could share one thing about Indian culture, it would be how to celebrate Indian festivals. Keerthan is a gym rat and Gym is his Favourite place on campus.๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

Student Spotlight ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š

Meet Karthik Manikanta Reddy, who is pursuing a master's in data science and proudly represents the vibrant culture and heritage of Andhra Pradesh, India. One must-visit place from his hometown is Tirumala โ€” a breathtaking
destination nestled in the ancient Seshachalam Hills, where spirituality and nature blend seamlessly. The seven sacred hills, known as Saptagiri, rise majestically above the plains, wrapped in lush green forests, misty valleys, and
winding ghat roads. According to tradition, these seven hills represent the seven heads of the divine serpent Adisesha, making the landscape itself sacred. As dawn breaks, golden sunlight paints the hills while the chants of โ€œGovinda
Govindaโ€ echo through the air. The journey to the hilltop offers breathtaking views of dense forests, deep ravines, and rolling mountains. The famous Sri Venkateswara Temple stands atop the seventh hill, attracting millions of devotees every year and creating a unique atmosphere of devotion and serenity.

Karthikโ€™s favourite food is Dosa -- a thin, crispy South Indian crepe made from a fermented batter of rice and black gram (urad dal); and Punugulu -- a deep-fried!evening snack made from fermented dosa or idli batter.

Kartik says the best time he had at Wright State so far was during his first semester. โ€œI had the opportunity to meet new people from different states and backgrounds across the country. Building friendships and learning about different cultures made my experience memorable.โ€

Student Spotlight: Meet Rahul Balami ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š

From Chitlang, Makwanpur, Nepal! Rahul is pursuing a bachelor's degree in accountancy & finance and brings a thoughtful, motivated, and community-focused perspective to campus life at Wright State. When asked about a must-visit place in his hometown, Rahul recommends Indrasarowar Lake โ€” Nepalโ€™s biggest man-made lake and a beautiful destination to experience nature and relaxation. One of the biggest cultural differences Rahul has noticed between Nepal and the U.S. is how festivals are celebrated. In Nepal, festivals focus heavily on community, history, and togetherness, while here they are often centered more around family time and spending quality time together.

One thing Rahul values most about studying at Wright State is the diversity on campus:
โ€œMeeting people from various backgrounds and learning about their stories.โ€ If he could teach everyone one thing about his culture, it would be how to make cultural foods filled with rich spices! His favorite phrase in Nepali Basha is: โ€œเคธเคพเคƒเคธเคพเคƒ (Saah-saah)โ€ โ€” meaning โ€œvery tasty.โ€ Rahulโ€™s advice for new students: โ€œDonโ€™t panic when something goes the wrong way. Try to figure out what you could do to improve it and ask for help.โ€

The best advice heโ€™s received while studying abroad is to explore your interests and take risks
toward your future. Since studying at Wright State, Rahul says heโ€™s discovered how much he
enjoys hearing peopleโ€™s life stories and learning how they became who they are today, and those
stories motivated Rahul to be better than yesterday. You can often find Rahul at two of his favorite campus spots โ€” Dunbar Library, and the rock-climbing gym. Rahul says Wright State has supportive faculty members who will โ€œshow up
when I need them.โ€
