Dayton Air Show
• The 2026 Dayton Air Show was a huge success, setting records for attendance (90,000 over two days). Medical support for such a massive event is a huge undertaking, ably led by members of the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) in conjunction with Premier Health/Miami Valley Hospital, Careflight, and multiple regional EMS agencies.
• DEM EMS Co-Director and Adjunct Assistant Professor Dr Brandon Amburgey continues to ace his role as the Air Show Medical Director
• Medical tents were staffed with a total of 4 resident physicians on each of the days. Attending supervision was provided by DEM adjunct and community faculty
• DEM Chair Dr Brian Springer was present both days, serving as float attending for the medical tents as well as medical support of on-site law enforcement special operations
• A total of 77 patients were seen over the two days, with only 5 requiring transport, owing to the tremendous abilities of the medical teams assembled under Dr Amburgey’s leadership
Shown below, busy at work at the medical tents, are EM resident physicians Samantha Salcido (R1) and Emma Gwin (R2) (being photo-bombed by MVH Emergency RN Rosie Buckalew). The photo beneath that shows EM resident physicians Chris Heli (R2) and Dana Schulz (R3)

Automobile Extrication Class
• The annual Automobile Extrication Class was hosted by Kettering Fire Department for the second year EM Residency class. Under direction of KFD Firefighter/Paramedics, residents learn the complexities of using tools such as the “jaws of life” to free victims entraped in vehicles following accidents. This knowledge makes them better emergency physicians, better attuned to the mechanisms of injury sustained by their patients and the challenges of rapidly transitioning from field care to the emergency department. Also in attendance were DEM military faculty and WPAFB EMS Medical Director Dr Adam Kruse, and DEM Chair and KFD Medical Director Dr Brian Springer

Congratulations Dr. Jordan Hickey and Dr. Meagan Verbillion on your awards!

Clerkship Director, Dr. Jordan Hickey received the 2026 WSU Academy of Medicine Excellence in Medical Education and Research Award (junior faculty). She was recognized for her outstanding work in bedside education, and her rapid ascent to the role of Clerkship Director, where she has excelled.

Curriculum Director Dr. Megan Verbillion received the 2026 BSOM Excellence in Resident Education Award. The selection committee was particularly impressed with her development and implementation of the annual In-Training Examination (ITE) preparation program and resident study plan initiative for the WSU Emergency Medicine Residency.

We are proud of all you have accomplished!

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Dr. Paul Zych. He died on March 28, 2026, at the age of 68. He is a graduate of the Wright State Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Class of 1984. For many of our graduates, he will be remembered as a fixture in the Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Department.

To say they broke the mold after him would be an understatement. He was known for his gruff mannerisms, salty language, bushy moustache, incredible wealth of medical knowledge, and a bedside manner that made him beloved by his patients and nursing staff. He was known and loved by public safety through his work as an EMS medical director and Dayton Air Show medical director.

My personal remembrances are too numerous to count (and mostly NSFW), but I will share my experience as a clueless intern on a Good Sam night shift, during a rare quiet moment. Dr. Zych points at me, commands “Springer! Come here!” and leads me out onto the loading dock. He reaches into his white coat, pulls out a pack of Kools, lights up, and proceeds to educate me on “what the f**k emergency medicine is really all about.” My EM street smarts came from doctors like him. He will be greatly missed.

-Brian Springer

From annual ultrasound faculty holiday cards to a toy drive with FemInEM for Homefull Holiday Adopt-A-Family, celebrating our residents, and Santas choosing chaos, not a bad way to end the year. Always grateful for the community and the laughs. Happy holidays from WSU EM.

SonoGames and Sim Day Shenanigans!
--
The inaugural WSU SonoGames was held at the Sim Lab this week! SonoGames is based on the SAEM contest as a way to challenge residents to use their ultrasound skills in a fun, gamified approach. Team names included The Probe Rangers, The Beam Team, Hertz Locker, and Aquasonics Anonymous among others. One event included identifying the value of Galleons, Sickels, and Knuts in a magical tofu block. Other events included a modified game of Quidditch (using a broom and a Swiffer), Magical MSK Matching, and a trivia quiz! Thanks to all the residents and faculty for their participation in this academic challenge! As a reminder to Dr. Titus Chu on his Swiffer broomstick, it's leviOsa not levioSA!
