Welcome to Wellness Wednesday! This week is focused on the importance of getting enough rest.
The summer is an exciting time – whether you are taking summer classes, flight training, or gaining work experience. As exciting as it can be, it is important to prioritize good rest as well!
Prioritize a healthy sleep schedule by keeping your bedtime and wake time consistent. You can keep this consistency by limiting caffeine later in the day, avoiding screen time right before bed, and creating positive nighttime rituals.
When creating a bedtime routine, focus on:
- Choosing a realistic time to go to bed every night
- Shutting down electronics ahead of the bedtime routine
- Relaxing activities – like drinking non-caffeinated tea, taking a warm bath or shower, or listening to calming music
- Finding a good book to read a few pages of before bed
- Creating a restful area for sleep using blankets, controlling the temperature, and drawing the shades
Happy resting!

Welcome to Wellness Wednesday! This week is about the importance of nutrition.
Life gets busy as a college student, and sometimes the excitement of the day leads to poor nutrition as our focus is on homework, projects, flight training, and other activities. Nutrition can actually assist in this scenario as eating well balanced meals leads to increased energy, an improved immune system, an increased ability to handle stress, and better concentration.
Here are ways to boost your nutrition:
- Find fruits and vegetables that you like and incorporate them into your daily meals
- Try to swap soda or sugary drinks out with a glass of water
- Seek out low-fat sources of protein such as eggs, beans, poultry, seafood, soy products, dairy products, and nuts
- Try to be mindful of your fast-food intake and limit consumption as much as possible. If you do have to eat fast food, review the restaurant’s nutritional fact sheet for the menu and try to select items that have less saturated fat, sodium, and sugar.
https://www.helpguide.org/articles/healthy-eating/healthier-fast-food.htm
- Take snacks with you when you’re studying.
https://www.myplate.gov/tip-sheet/healthy-snacking-myplate
- Find a balance of wholegrains, vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy products. https://www.myplate.gov/
Remember that eating provides your body with the energy needed to perform well at school, work, and flight training! Most importantly, have fun creating delicious meals!

Welcome to Wellness Wednesday!

This week we are discussing how to manage stress while preparing for flight training milestones such as check rides.
In life, stress is unavoidable. There may be small moments of stress, or acute stress, which is a normal response to situations that may require a quick stress reaction. Sometimes, this feeling may pile up and feel as if the stress response will not stop. This type of stress is called chronic stress and can lead to burnout.

Flight training is an amazing opportunity that can come with stressors as you progress through the course. Here are the four A’s to help manage stress while flight training:

Avoid – say “no” to situations that may cause high levels of stress, such as flying in exceedingly high winds.
Alter – change the situation by communicating how you feel and what you require for success.
Adapt – if the problem persists, you must adapt. Try reframing the situation in your mind to view certain setbacks as an opportunity for greater success.
Accept – if you cannot avoid or change the situation, accept that the situation cannot be changed and continue to move forward. Be mindful of those situations and know that sometimes there is nothing that can be done to change a scenario.

To learn more about how you can manage check ride stress, check out Mr. Keiron Timothy from the Counseling Center as he discusses how you can A.C. E. Your Check Ride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_MYHZGX5kI

It's a small world, isn't it?

It really is a small world!

A cockpit conversation on April 12 revealed an Embry-Riddle link in the flight deck of a Cathay Pacific Boeing 777 flying from Chicago O’Hare to Hong Kong. Three of the four pilots onboard were Eagles!

Seen here, pre-departure, are Second Officer Ronald Lee (DB, '14), First Officer Ching Kwok (PC, '07), and Captain Matt McLaughlin (WW, current student).

Come out TODAY to show your support as Ret. Major General Alfred K. Flowers, the longest serving Airman in United States Air Force history, is honored. The ceremony will start at 11:30 a.m. and take place at the Student Union. See you there!

The aviation industry is banking on the next generation of potential pilots to maintain future air travel. An estimated 1.3 million new pilots are needed to fly current and new fleets for the two largest commercial jet manufacturers, Boeing and Airbus, within the next twenty years.
