Mosquitoes: Even if you haven't seen them yet, they're here! And they can bring more than irritated, itchy skin with them. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) recently found West Nile Virus in birds and mosquitoes (no human cases yet this year). The virus spreads through mosquito bites, and usually does not create any symptoms, but can cause fever, chills, headaches, rashes, and more severe reactions in vulnerable populations.
So, is now the time to lock yourself inside until fall (or after there is a hard frost of temperatures below 28° for at least 4 straight hours)? Not necessarily!
A few things you can do to keep these unwelcome guests away:
• Use a good bug spray, something with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535.
• Wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks so they can't get to your skin.
• When not in use, empty kiddie pools, buckets, small boats, and containers with standing water.
• Make sure your window and door screens are tight and have no holes.
