What rights do consumers really have when it comes to repairing the products they own?

UM-Dearborn College of Business Associate Professor of Decision Science Wayne Fu is bringing his research and expertise to the growing national conversation around the “right to repair” movement.

In a recent article for The Conversation, Fu explores consumer protections, product warranties and why enforcement of existing protections may be just as important as new right-to-repair legislation. He also discusses how barriers to repair can encourage consumers to replace products rather than fix them, creating broader sustainability implications.

Fu also joined Michigan Public’s Morning Edition to help consumers better understand their repair and warranty rights. His contributions demonstrate how College of Business faculty apply their expertise to important public issues and make research accessible to audiences beyond the university.

On Saturday, August 6, alumni, faculty, staff, and current students gathered at the Fairlane Estate to celebrate two decades of iLabs, the Center for Innovation.

The celebration featured remarks from COB Dean Frederic Brunel and Tim Davis, Executive Director for Engagement and Innovation, along with a special video message from iLabs founder Dr. Kim Schatzel, who reflected on the center’s beginnings and its very first project with Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Since 2006, iLabs has given nearly 250 students the opportunity to tackle real-world business challenges, supported aspiring entrepreneurs through its annual business idea pitch competition, showcased dozens of local small businesses, and brought students, businesses, and the community together through engaging events and programs.

Here’s to 20 years of innovation, experiential learning, and community impact, and to what comes next!

The best classroom sometimes starts outside the classroom.

When faculty bring their industry connections into the learning experience, everyone benefits. Students gain hands-on consulting experience, businesses receive fresh perspectives backed by market research, and classroom concepts become real-world solutions.

That's exactly what happened when marketing students, under the guidance of Steve Aldrich, partnered with an established restaurant group to tackle real marketing challenges.

Experiences like these are possible because our faculty connect students with real organizations, real clients and real business problems, preparing them to make an impact from day one.
