Freshman Friday: Where Learning Meets Opportunity
BA 101 students stepped beyond campus to experience Detroit’s innovation ecosystem firsthand at Newlab and Michigan Central. They toured production labs where 3D prototypes come to life, saw where drones are tested, and explored how the historic train station has been reimagined as a hub for technology, entrepreneurship, and community.
The Newlab experience also connected students with Meagan Ward, founder and CEO of Femology. A community builder, mentor, and global speaker, Ward introduced students to Femology’s work connecting women entrepreneurs with the resources, relationships, and opportunities they need to succeed. She also brought founders together to meet with students and share firsthand perspectives on building and growing a business.
Students heard from a panel of accomplished founders and business leaders, including Hana Abboud, designer and founder of Hana Abboud, a bridal shop in Dearborn; Pauline Kersuzan, founder and owner of the learning media company reading•sync; and José Lemus, director of Talent & Network at Michigan Central. Together, they shared candid lessons about the risks, resilience, and relationships behind entrepreneurship, giving students a firsthand look at how ideas become impact.
It’s what Freshman Fridays are all about: taking learning beyond the classroom and into the places where business happens.
