It's ! Today, we are highlighting three CASL alumni for their achievements: Aaron V. Burrell, JD, MSA ('07 BA), Rula Aoun ('11 BA), and Natalie Spala ('19 BA). Learn more about their accomplishments below.

The State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners has elected Aaron V. Burrell to serve as Board secretary for the 2026-27 Bar year. Burrell will be officially sworn into his new role at the Presidential Inauguration & Awards Luncheon on September 18, 2026. Rula Aoun was recently appointed to the Wayne County Circuit Court! Gov. Whitmer announced the appointment of Dearborn Magistrate Rula Aoun to the Wayne County Circuit Court, further expanding Arab American representation on the bench of Michigan’s largest trial court. Natalie Spala has joined Chicago's NBC 5 as the weekend sports anchor/reporter beginning on August 31st. She will also contribute to the channel's weekly sports highlights and features program, Sports Sunday. University of Michigan-Dearborn alum and Detroit community builder Carlos Parisi, owner of Aunt Nee’s Chips and Salsa, is bringing the Detroit Sandwich Party back to Eastern Market, and this year it is bigger than ever!

If you know Carlos, you know he is all about bringing people together. Whether through Aunt Nee’s, community events, or the Dearborn Dialogue he hosted for us earlier this year, Carlos has a way of creating connections and celebrating the people and businesses that make Detroit special.

This year, 50 vendors will be serving up small-format sandwiches, with more than double the space compared to last year. Best of all, it is completely free to attend. Come by anytime from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 6th.

We are proud to see a UM-Dearborn alum continuing to bring people together and put some of the best ingredients of Detroit on the table: good food, great people, and community!

UM-Dearborn just launched the first bachelor’s degree in research administration in the United States, creating new opportunities for students to build careers at the intersection of research, project management, finance, compliance and innovation.

And the possibilities are big! Research administrators work across universities, health systems, nonprofits and industries like automotive, aerospace and energy.

It’s another example of how UM-Dearborn continues to evolve to meet the needs of students, employers and our community while preparing Wolverines for what’s next.

Did you know UM-Dearborn was named the first-ever Bird City Michigan Campus by the Michigan Audubon? A special shout out to CASL graduate Kathleen Mennillo, MBA ('98 BA), who serves as the CEO of Michigan Audubon. Kathleen and other alumni and university representatives recognized the importance of this designation during last week's celebration. Congratulations to UM-Dearborn alumni Matthew Frank ('00 BA, CASL) and Sean Sant ('92 BBA, COB) for their recent recognition on the 2026 list of Crain's Notable Leaders in Accounting, Consulting, and Law. Read more about them below.

Matthew Frank handles mergers and acquisitions, aviation, real estate and corporate law. He advises privately held businesses on structuring deals, negotiating contracts and managing complex transactions, collaborating with internal and external parties to achieve strategic goals.

Sean Sant advises family-owned businesses and high-net-worth individuals on estate, retirement, financial and tax planning. He also counsels on IRS procedures and controversy, dispute resolution, entity planning, accounting methods, international structuring and other complex tax matters.
