The garden keeps growing—and so do the stories.

The newest expansion of the Ypsi Farmers & Gardeners Oral History Project brings 12 new narrators and 11 fresh oral histories to the Ypsilanti District Library’s digital collection.

Project lead and Health and Human Services Professor Finn Bell guided this phase, working with a new community advisory board to intentionally amplify Indigenous, younger, immigrant, and refugee growers.

From backyard plots to larger farms, these voices share how growing food preserves culture, builds resilience, and creates healing after displacement.

“Food is the basis of life,” Bell reminds us. And these stories show why protecting seed knowledge, land access, and community memory matters more than ever.

Dive into the new interviews and discover the people quietly shaping Ypsi’s food landscape.

Scaling Interprofessional Education to Improve Human Health

This project will expand hands-on, team-based learning opportunities that bring students across all 26 U-M health science programs, spanning 10 health science schools and three campuses, together in clinical and community settings. The core goal is to move health professions education beyond classroom-based learning by embedding students into real clinical and community settings where they collaborate on patient care and community health challenges.

What does effective instructional coaching look like—and how can it strengthen teaching and improve student outcomes?

The Jean and Ken Simpson Professional Development Series for Educators brought together administrators, teachers, and students to explore the answer. Guest speakers shared practical approaches to advancing literacy achievement, selecting effective instructional strategies, providing meaningful feedback, and creating classroom environments where students can thrive. Administrators also examined how a broader range of data can reveal trends, identify root causes, and guide effective schoolwide strategies.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mallory Simpson and her husband, Gregory Schatzle, whose generosity established this series in honor of Mallory’s parents, Jean and Ken Simpson. Their support is helping prepare future educators to enter the classroom with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to positively transform students’ lives.

An exhibition of greeting cards made in Michigan prisons is now on view at the University of Michigan Detroit Center through August 31th.

Postmarked From the Inside reveals how handmade cards can carry connection, remembrance, creativity, care, and hope within the prison system.

We are proud to recognize Im, Assistant Professor of Health and Human Services at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, who serves as Director and Chief Curator of the exhibition. Through his work with the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP), Dr. Im facilitates creative writing, theater, and music workshops in Michigan prisons. The exhibition is co-curated with Martin Vargas, Brianne Sheltraw, Suzy Moffat, and Emily Chase.

If you have the opportunity, visit the U-M Detroit Center and experience an exhibition that invites reflection on creativity, care, and resilience.
